Article Abstract

Biofilms are assemblages of microbial cells, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and other components extracted from the environment in which they develop. Within biofilms, the spatial distribution of these components can vary. Here we present a fundamental characterization study to show differences between biofilms formed by Gram-positive methicillin-resistant (MRSA), Gram-negative , and the yeast-type using synchrotron macro attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) microspectroscopy. We were able to characterise the pathogenic biofilms' heterogeneous distribution, which is challenging to do using traditional techniques. Multivariate analyses revealed that the polysaccharides area (1200-950 cm) accounted for the most significant variance between biofilm samples, and other spectral regions corresponding to amides, lipids, and polysaccharides all contributed to sample variation. In general, this study will advance our understanding of microbial biofilms and serve as a model for future research on how to use synchrotron source ATR-FTIR microspectroscopy to analyse their variations and spatial arrangements.

This dataset presents a comprehensive collection of microscopic images, infrared (IR) spectra of particles obtained from beach sediment in Tioman Island, Malaysia. Sediment samples were collected from multiple sites across three selected beaches to identify material composition and assess the concentration of plastic particles, including both microplastics (<5 mm) and macroplastics (>5 mm), in the region. The IR spectroscopic analysis was carried out in the mid-infrared range (4000-370 cm⁻¹), enabling detailed vibrational characterization of compounds present in the samples.

This dataset reports on the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis of a primary amine and some aldehydes along their corresponding Schiff bases. The dataset presented in this work consists of spectral FTIR data acquired in the 80-6000 cm⁻¹ range, along with the corresponding relative IR intensities of the samples. The primary amine and aldehydes were of high purity and were used to synthesise the corresponding Schiff bases.

The inflammatory response to biomaterials plays a critical role in determining the implant performance and longevity. As key early responders, macrophages detect the implant surface and orchestrate immune reactions. Biomaterial surface properties are a key modifiable factor that significantly influences macrophage activation and local immune response.

This dataset presents comprehensive spectroscopic and chromatographic profiling of 27 e-liquid samples including commercial formulations, a booster, and a nicotine solution (the e-liquids were collected in Ampang Jaya, Malaysia before April 2023). Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was performed across the near-, mid-, and far-infrared ranges (6000-80 cm), generating unique transmittance spectra for each sample. These spectra revealed vibrational bands characteristic of nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, and various additives, supporting rapid qualitative fingerprinting and comparison through OPUS software.

Innovations in nanostructured surfaces have found a practical place in the medical area with use in implant materials for post-operative infection prevention. These textured surfaces should be dual purpose: (1) bactericidal on contact and (2) resistant to biofilm formation over prolonged periods. Here, hydrothermally etched titanium surfaces were tested against two highly antimicrobial resistant microbial species, methicillin-resistant and .
