Article Abstract

A novel hydrate form of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was firstly discovered through a hydrate screening with the use of organic solvents, while SDS is generally prepared solely in aqueous media. Surprisingly, a novel SDS hydrate form with needle-shaped crystals produced by adding acetonitrile to a 20 wt % SDS aqueous solution at a ratio of 3:1 (v/v) and further cooling to around 5 °C could be found with a trace amount in one of the two purchased SDS products that we examined. After comprehensive solid-state characterizations by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, dynamic vapor sorption (DVS), and elemental analysis (EA), it is also successfully made directly from the synthesis of SDS through esterification and saponification. Four times the equal proportion of acetone was added into the reaction solution at an interval of 5 min to separate the side product, sodium sulfate, from the mother liquor. The desired novel hydrate form of SDS was then obtained by cooling the filtered mother liquor to 5 °C and aged for 8 h for a preferential growth.

Background Fasting during the month of Ramadan is practiced by over a billion Muslims worldwide. This religious observance, which involves complete abstention from food and fluids during daylight hours, may contribute to dehydration and increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly in hot climates. Despite this theoretical concern, limited clinical evidence exists on the actual incidence and risk of VTE associated with prolonged fasting.

We report the hydrothermal syntheses and structural and spectroscopic characterization of two new uranium oxide hydrate frameworks (UOHFs) with either Pr or Nd ions, Pr(HO)[(UO)UO(OH)] () or Nd(HO)[(UO)UO(OH)] (). Both UOHFs crystallize in the orthorhombic 222 space group and display needle crystal morphologies. Their crystal structures are composed of β-UO-type layers connected by double uranium polyhedra to form the frameworks, with disordered Pr/Nd ions within the framework channels, as revealed by synchrotron single-crystal XRD.

Hydrated magnesium sulfates (MgSO·HO) are known to form multiple hydration states ( = 0-11) and are essential in planetary science and thermochemical energy storage. Despite their significance in detecting extraterrestrial water reservoirs or in mineral (de)hydration cycles, it is still necessary to understand how the structure-property relationships of these materials evolve at different hydration levels when pressure is applied. Through a systematic first-principles computational investigation, we elucidate the key structural factors governing the densification mechanism under hydrostatic pressure of MgSO·HO crystals.

In order to promote the development and application of low-carbon cement varieties and the recycling of industrial solid waste, this study used iron tailings and fluorogypsum to prepare iron-rich belite-sulfoaluminate cement (I-BCSA). The suitable conditions for the preparation of I-BCSA in this system were with an excessive addition of 6 wt% of SO in the raw meal, at a calcination temperature of 1250 °C for 1.5 h, and an added-gypsum content of 15 wt%.

In this study, infrared spectroscopy investigations in combination with DFT calculations were used to elucidate interactions between bosentan monohydrate (BOS) and sildenafil base (SIL) initiated under high energy ball milling. The research was focused mainly on the vibrational properties of their co-milled binary solid dispersions compared to the physical mixtures and single drugs. First, the stability and structure of sildenafil isomers were established.
