Article Abstract

Plasmonic nanostructure-mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) has proven to be a promising approach for cancer treatment, and new approaches for its effective delivery to tumor lesions are currently being developed. This study aimed to assess macrophage-mediated delivery of PTT using radioiodine-124-labeled gold nanoparticles with crushed gold shells (I-Au@AuCBs) as a theranostic nanoplatform. I-Au@AuCBs exhibited effective photothermal conversion effects both in vitro and in vivo and were efficiently taken up by macrophages without cytotoxicity. After the administration of I-Au@AuCB-labeled macrophages to colon tumors, intensive signals were observed at tumor lesions, and subsequent in vivo PTT with laser irradiation yielded potent antitumor effects. The results indicate the considerable potential of I-Au@AuCBs as novel theranostic nanomaterials and the prominent advantages of macrophage-mediated cellular therapies in treating cancer and other diseases.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining is a critical livelihood for many in developing regions, yet it poses momentous environmental and health risks, principally through the release of naturally occurring radioactive materials. The study evaluates the annual effective dose received by artisans engaged in several mining activities at Itagunmodi and Iperindo in Osun State, Nigeria. The soil and rock samples were analysed for the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides (K, Ra, and Th) using gamma spectrometry.

Introduction: Intraoperative frozen section analysis (IOFS) is a widely used method for evaluating ovarian masses and guiding surgical decisions. However, IOFS is not always accessible in low-resource settings. Recent research suggests that intraoperative cytology (IOC) may offer a quicker, less equipment-dependent alternative.

Introduction: The vagina is a finely balanced microecological environment. The rupture of this balance leads to dysbiosis, which causes the resident microbiota to be overcome by pathogens. This event triggers the onset of gynecological infectious diseases, normally treated with antimicrobial drugs, considered to date as the gold standard; yet the increasing rate of drug resistance requires novel approaches and alternative therapeutic strategies.

Artisanal mining in Nigeria is growing along with the increase in the price of metals. However, self-employed miners, particularly in the northwest of the country, have brought extensive environmental contamination and severe lead poisoning from the lead content in the ore. This study assessed airborne lead exposures to miners during lead mining and gold ore processing in three villages in Zamfara State, Nigeria.

This study evaluated the geochemical stability of three ATRW-based glasses, containing 5 wt% As (G5), 10 wt% As (G10), and 15 wt% As (G15), using selective extraction protocols. Micro X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) maps incorporated with micro-X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (µ-XANES) and bulk XANES across the As K-edge were collected to determine the distributions and oxidation number of As within the glasses. Antimony K-edge XANES were collected to determine oxidation number of Sb within the glasses.
