Steel sandwich sheets (steel-polymer-steel), which are composed of lightweight polymers bonded on both sides with rigid steel sheets, have recently been developed as functional lightweight materials. In this study, a steel sandwich sheet (electrogalvanized (EG) steel sheet-polypropylene (PP)-EG steel sheet) with improved normal adhesion is fabricated without adhesives. Instead, adhesion is achieved via mechanical interlocking between the etched EG steel sheets and PP. Hierarchical structures were formed on the EG steel sheet surface by electrochemical etching to attain effective mechanical interlocking for improving normal adhesion without any adhesives. In the case of the EG steel sheet etched at 6 V for 7 s, a high fraction (∼35%) of holes (size: <1 μm) with nanoscale scalloped structures was formed on the EG steel sheet surface. The normal adhesion test result of the fabricated steel sandwich sheet showed that the adhesion strength increased from virtually 0 (bare) to 559.6 kPa as a result of mechanical interlocking. The results of the focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry analyses confirmed the cohesive failure of PP resulting from the successful mechanical interlocking of PP with the holes formed on the etched EG steel sheet. To examine the effect of hierarchical structures on the normal adhesion of the steel sandwich sheet, finite element analysis was implemented.

As the most dangerous mycotoxin, aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has caused some food safety issues to be concerned. In this study, a simultaneous detection and degradation method towards AFB1 was established. Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) were firstly synthesized and directly in situ deposited on the stainless-steel mesh, which would trigger the free-radical polymerization of acrylamide to form a hydrogel coating.

Drilling-induced damage in fiber-reinforced polymer composite materials was measured excavating four laminates, basalt (B), glass (G) and their two sandwich type hybrids (BGB, GBG), with 6 mm twist drills at 1520 revolutions per minute and 0.10 mm rev under dry running with an uncoated high-speed steel (HSS-R), grind-coated high-speed steel (HSS-G) or physical vapor deposition-coated (high-speed steel coated with Titanium Nitride (TiN) and Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN)) drill bits. The hybrid sheets were deliberately incorporated to clarify how alternating basalt-glass architectures redistribute interlaminar stresses during drilling, while the hard, low-friction TiN and TiAlN ceramic coatings enhance cutting performance by forming a heat-resistant tribological barrier that lowers tool-workpiece adhesion, reduces interface temperature, and thereby suppresses thrust-induced delamination.

Submerged floating tunnels (SFT) offer a promising solution for deep-water crossings and intercontinental transportation. However, current SFT designs struggle to meet the high structural performance demands associated with the harsh service environments while remaining economically viable, thus limiting their implementation in practice. Here, we propose a conceptual SFT design using a triple-chord trussed concrete-filled double-skin tubular (CFDST) hybrid structure, featuring CFDST chords and hollow steel tubular braces.

Background: The Petricore™ Aerobic Count (AC) method is used for enumeration of mesophilic bacterial colony counts in a broad range of food and environmental samples. The plate is a ready-to-use dry rehydratable film media composed of modified standard-method nutrients, water-soluble gelling agents and a tetrazolium indicator on the adhesive sheets, and transparent cover film.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to validate the Petricore AC for AOAC Performance Tested MethodsSM (PTM) certification.

Sandwich panels have established themselves as self-supporting and isolating construction elements for room closures in hall construction. As a result of subsequently installed photovoltaic (PV) systems or cladding, sandwich panels are subjected to point loads at the connection points to the substructure of additional systems. In the case of pressure-suction changes from wind, a cyclical local load also occurs.
