Article Abstract

Body posture influences human and robot performance in manipulation tasks, as appropriate poses facilitate motion or the exertion of force along different axes. In robotics, manipulability ellipsoids arise as a powerful descriptor to analyze, control, and design the robot dexterity as a function of the articulatory joint configuration. This descriptor can be designed according to different task requirements, such as tracking a desired position or applying a specific force. In this context, this article presents a novel framework, a method that allows robots to learn and reproduce manipulability ellipsoids from expert demonstrations. The proposed learning scheme is built on a tensor-based formulation of a Gaussian mixture model that takes into account that manipulability ellipsoids lie on the manifold of symmetric positive-definite matrices. Learning is coupled with a geometry-aware tracking controller allowing robots to follow a desired profile of manipulability ellipsoids. Extensive evaluations in simulation with redundant manipulators, a robotic hand and humanoids agents, as well as an experiment with two real dual-arm systems validate the feasibility of the approach.

Improved RRT*-Connect Manipulator Path Planning in a Multi-Obstacle Narrow Environment.

Sensors (Basel)

April 2025

National Engineering Laboratory for Big Data System Computing Technology, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen 518000, China.

This paper proposes an improved RRT*-Connect algorithm (IRRT*-Connect) for robotic arm path planning in narrow environments with multiple obstacles. A heuristic sampling strategy is adopted with the integration of the ellipsoidal subset sampling and goal-biased sampling strategies, which can continuously compress the sampling space to enhance the sampling efficiency. During the node expansion process, an adaptive step-size method is introduced to dynamically adjust the step size based on the obstacle information, while a node rejection strategy is used to accelerate the search process so as to generate a near-optimal collision-free path.

This article presents a high-confidence data-driven safe tracking control design for stochastic linear discrete-time systems. The high-confidence safe reference tracking for an ellipsoidal safe set is first formalized using the concept of probabilistic set-based $\lambda $ -contractivity. A data-driven controller, composed of feedback and feedforward elements, is then designed to enforce the $\lambda $ -contractivity of the safe set.

Background: Herein, we developed a new index called the drawbridge index to predict surgical outcomes and assessed its value in guiding surgical decision-making for large macular holes (MHs) with diameters of 400-550 μm.

Methods: A total of 48 eyes with large MHs (diameters of 400 to 550 μm), which had undergone vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling, were included and retrospectively analyzed. Based on optical coherence tomography images, base diameter, minimum linear diameter, the macular hole index (MHI), diameter hole index (DHI), and traction hole index (THI) were measured and calculated.

Glass Transition in Monolayers of Rough Colloidal Ellipsoids.

Phys Rev Lett

January 2025

Soochow University, College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, Suzhou 215123, China.

Structure-dynamics correlation is one of the major ongoing debates in the glass transition, although a number of structural features have been found connected to the dynamic heterogeneity in different glass-forming colloidal systems. Here, using colloidal experiments combined with coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the glass transition in monolayers of rough colloidal ellipsoids. Compared with smooth colloidal ellipsoids, the surface roughness of ellipsoids is found to significantly change the nature of glass transition.
