Background: The prognosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) varies in children with nephrotic syndrome (NS), data on factors predicting the recovery and recurrence of AKI in children with NS are limited. This study aimed to explore the possible factors predicting the recovery from and recurrence of AKI in children with primary NS.
Methods: Children with primary NS complicated with AKI from 1993 to 2017 in a single centre were reviewed retrospectively. The clinical pictures and possible factors predicting the recovery from and recurrence of AKI in children with primary NS were investigated.
Results: Sixty-eight episodes of AKI in 59 children with NS were analysed: 88.2% of AKI recovered within 3 months, and 2.9% of AKI did not recover after 3 months. Survival analysis revealed that leucocyturia is significantly related to the AKI recovery time (P = 0.001), and children with leucocyturia [22 (4, 79) days] recovered significantly slower than did children without leucocyturia [12.0 (2, 39) days]. Renal tubular and interstitial injury were prominent in children with leucocyturia, and 11.9% of children with index AKI experienced the recurrence of AKI.
Conclusions: Most episodes of AKI that occurred in children with NS recovered completely. Leucocyturia is a significant factor predicting the recovery time of AKI.

Methods: We utilized machine learning methods on biologic analytes provided over 12-months after hospital discharge from >500 COVID-19 patients in the IMPACC cohort to identify a multi-omics "recovery factor", trained on patient-reported physical function survey scores.

Introduction: The definition of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) does not take into account a preclinical phase during which the thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is increased, prior to optic nerve atrophy, reducing the chances of visual recovery.
Objectives: Search for a metabolomic signature characterizing this preclinical phase and identify biomarkers predicting the risk of LHON onset.
Methods And Results: The blood and tear metabolomic profiles of 90 asymptomatic LHON mutation carriers followed for one year will be explored as a function of RNFL thickness and compared to those of a healthy control.

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) remains a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability globally, with survivors at high risk of recurrent stroke, cardiovascular events, and post-stroke dementia. Statins, while widely used for their lipid-lowering effects, also possess pleiotropic properties, including anti-inflammatory, endothelial-stabilizing, and neuroprotective actions, which may offer added benefit in AIS management. This article synthesizes emerging evidence on statins' dual mechanisms of action and evaluates their role in reducing recurrence, improving survival, and mitigating cognitive decline.

What effect does evolutionary history have on the recovery of multicellularity? Khey and Travisano (2025) show that multicellularity can be recovered in all populations of their experimentally evolved Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, the history of these cell lines changed the tempo and mode of adaptation in which these lines recovered multicellularity. These findings uncover further details on how evolutionary histories affect future trajectories and contribute another piece to the puzzle that is the predictability of evolution.

Polytrauma patients are defined by the Berlin Consensus as those with severe injuries across multiple regions and require complex, adaptable treatment approaches to address both immediate and long-term needs of the patient, while considering the resource availability. This review evaluates early total care (ETC), which attempts early definitive fixation, against damage control orthopedics (DCO), which focuses on temporary stabilization to reduce physiological strain from surgery. While ETC promotes early mobilization, DCO reduces risks and subsequent complications associated with the "second hit" phenomenon in critically ill patients.
