Postoperative recovery for patients (particularly elderly) will be commonly encountered for postoperative neurocognitive disorders. Although effort has been undertaken to better understand and prevent these disorders, little improvement has been observed, due to largely unknown mechanisms. Emerging evidence indicates that noncoding RNAs including microRNA(s), long noncoding RNA(s), and circular RNA(s) are promising biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and novel pathways to reveal mechanisms of postoperative neurocognitive disorders. However, there has been little crosstalk between noncoding RNA biology and development of postoperative neurocognitive disorders. We discuss the major noncoding RNAs in mechanisms, diagnosis, risk-stratification, prognosis, and treatment in postoperative neurocognitive disorders in a novel approach.

Background: As a non-competitive blocker of the -methyl-d-aspartate receptor, ketamine is widely used for anesthesia and pain relief in clinical settings. However, certain neurological side effects may appear if it is used for the long term. According to clinical observations, anesthetic doses of ketamine trigger postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction in elderly patients, while subanesthetic doses of ketamine suppress the postoperative neuronal pyroptosis in the hippocampus, ameliorating the cognitive function.

Background: Although exercises and physical activities are beneficial for overall health, it can unfortunately result in a musculoskeletal injury that requires a surgical intervention in physically active youth. One of the major injures young athletes sustain is anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, which often requires a surgical intervention. Following the ACL reconstruction (ACLR) surgery, athletes need to participate in rehabilitation and often perform return-to-sport (RTS) testing.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of anaesthesia and surgical procedures on the cognitive function of both young and aged mice. It will also explore the role and mechanisms of c-Fos expression in altering hippocampal neuron excitability and its relationship with perioperative neurocognitive disorders in mice.
Methods: In this study, we used a murine laparotomy model to assess cognitive behavioural changes in both young and aged mice at 1, 3, and 7 days post-surgery.

Background: Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) plays a critical role in the transmigration of peripheral monocytes, a central mechanism underlying chronic inflammation. In this study, we investigate postoperative serum kinetics of MCP-1 as a potential contributor to postoperative neurocognitive decline, arteriosclerosis, and the development of organ failures.
Methods: Seventy-one patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery were included in this study.
