Article Abstract

Purpose: To assess the vascular pattern of choroidal vortex veins at the horizontal watershed zone in normal eyes using optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Methods: We retrospectively studied 207 normal eyes of 207 patients whose fellow eyes were diagnosed with unilateral retinal diseases without choroidal involvement. Venous anastomosis between the superior and inferior vortex veins and deviation of the horizontal watershed zone were evaluated using 12 × 12-mm en face OCT images. Central choroidal thickness (CCT) was measured on B-mode OCT images.

Results: Vortex vein anastomosis was observed in 92 eyes (44.4%) at the horizontal watershed zone. Superior or inferior deviation of the horizontal watershed was ascertained in 69 eyes (33.3%). The frequency of the anastomosis and deviation did not differ significantly between age groups (P = 0.56 and 0.96, respectively). Mean CCT of all eyes was 221 ± 80 μm. CCT was significantly greater in eyes with anastomosis than in those without (233 ± 73 μm vs 210 ± 83 μm, P < 0.05). However, CCT did not differ significantly between eyes with and without deviation of the horizontal watershed zone (223 ± 74 μm vs 219 ± 82 μm).

Conclusions: Venous anastomosis at the horizontal watershed zone as well as superior or inferior deviation of the zone were frequently observed in normal eyes. CCT was greater in eyes with than in those without anastomosis, suggesting subclinical vortex vein congestion.

Limited ARG removal but stable resistome dynamics in a surface flow constructed wetland.

Improperly treated wastewater and surface runoff can degrade water quality by introducing microbial contaminants, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and their genes (ARGs). Constructed treatment wetlands (CTWs) offer a low-resource solution for managing impaired watersheds. However, their ability to mitigate microbial contaminants, particularly ARGs, requires further study.

Microplastics transport and impact on nitrogen cycling and NO emissions in estuaries.

Microplastic pollution in estuarine ecosystems disrupts nitrogen cycling and enhances nitrous oxide (NO) emissions, reinforcing the role of estuaries as greenhouse gas (GHG) hotspots. This review integrates mechanisms that modulate microplastic-induced disruptions to nitrogen cycling processes and transform estuarine biogeochemistry. It elucidates key mechanistic pathways whereby microplastic dynamics influence microbial nitrogen transformations and alter GHG fluxes.

The Yangtze River, a critical drinking water source for over 500 million people, faces escalating contamination from pharmaceuticals and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study systematically investigated 11 water sources and 39 tap water sites in the Mid-Yangtze River, quantifying 10 pharmaceuticals and 384 ARGs via ultra-trace analysis (UPLC-MS/MS) and HT-qPCR. Pharmaceuticals occurred at low total concentrations (1.

Reservoir ecosystems with diverse habitats form critical interfaces where antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions converge. Despite their distribution and ecological implications of ARGs across diverse habitats remain greatly unknown. There is a critical gap in dissecting the interlinkages between antibiotic resistomes and GHG-functioning microbes.

The kidney plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis, but lifestyle factors and diseases can lead to kidney failures. Early detection of kidney disease is crucial for effective intervention, often challenging due to unnoticeable symptoms in the initial stages. Computed tomography (CT) imaging aids specialists in detecting various kidney conditions.
