Article Abstract

Ancient Herculaneum papyrus scrolls, hopelessly charred in the 79 A.D. Vesuvius eruption, contain valuable writings of the Greek philosophers of the day, including works of the Epicurean Philodemus. X-ray phase contrast tomography has recently begun unlocking their secrets. However, only small portions of the text hidden inside the scroll have been recover. One of the challenging tasks in Herculaneum papyri investigation is their virtual unfolding because of their highly complicated structure and three-dimensional arrangement. Although this procedure is feasible, problems in segmentation and flattening hinder the unrolling of a large portion of papyrus. We propose a computational platform for the virtual unfolding procedure, and we show the results of its application on two Herculaneum papyrus fragments. This work paves the way to a comprehensive survey and to further interpretation of larger portions of text hidden inside the carbonized Herculaneum papyri.

Adaptive mechanisms of developing social connectedness in virtual reality environments.

Design Health (Abingdon)

June 2025

Media and Communication, Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Loneliness and social isolation, only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are pressing societal challenges. Social Virtual Reality (SVR), as a form of social technology, can be seen as one of the alternatives for those unable to engage in traditional in-person interactions. This paper explores the dynamics of the development of social connectedness in SVR environments, highlighting the roles of embodiment, gestures, and non-verbal cues.

Despite growing discussions on digitally mediated safer sex practices, little research has examined how gay men negotiate safety and perform identity through geo-social applications (apps) in non-Western contexts. This article integrates the materiality of digital technologies with the subjectivity of users to explore how gay men navigate their sexual safety on social apps. Bridging the concept of affordance with user agency, this article proposes a framework of to contemplate how gay men situate their sense of safety and leverage the affordances of social apps in the post-AIDS era within the sociocultural context of Taiwan.

Impact of the Polyphenol Structure on the Allergenic Potential of the Peanut Allergen Ara h 2.

J Agric Food Chem

July 2025

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Resources, Nanchang University, Nanchang, Jiangxi 330047, PR China.

Interactions between food allergens and polyphenols can provide a method to alleviate food allergies. This study investigated the effect of differently structured polyphenols complexed with Ara h 2 based on high-throughput virtual screening, utilizing a spectroscopic, thermodynamic, bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) model, BMDCs-T cells coculture model, KU812 cells model, and molecular simulation analyses for the allergenicity evaluation. Hesperidin (HSD), neohesperidin (NH), and neohesperidin dihydrochalcone (NHDC) exhibited a high binding energy and interacted with Ara h 2 through hydrogen bonding, primarily at two additional binding sites.

Objectives: Forensic psychiatric patients (FPS) face reduced life expectancy due to somatic comorbidities and unhealthy lifestyles. Exercise improves mental and physical health but is hindered by low patient motivation and constraints posed by forensic psychiatric settings. Virtual cycling (VC) programs could enhance motivation and address FPS' needs but remain understudied.
