Article Abstract

Polyvinylidene fluoride and its copolymers are a well-known family of low-cost ferroelectric materials widely used for the fabrication of devices for a wide range of applications. A biocompatibility, high optical quality, chemical and mechanical durability of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene), (P(VDF-TrFE)), makes it particularly attractive for designing of effective coating layers for different diagnostic techniques. In the present work, the nonlinear optical characterization of P(VDF-TrFE)-coating films deposited onto a glass substrate was done. Advantages of the coating application for cells/substrates in the field of multiphoton imaging the efficiency of such coating layer for long-duration characterization of so-called harmonic nanoparticles (HNPs) were shown. The influence of glass surface protection by P(VDF-TrFE) film from an effect of HNPs sticking to the walls of the flow-cell was analyzed for effective studying of the optical harmonics generation efficiency of HNPs making the analysis more robust.

In this study, silicon nanoparticles (NPs) were produced by pulsed laser ablation in a liquid, aiming to investigate the influence of a laser beam profile on the properties of the resultant NPs. Morphology, inner structure, and phase composition of the formed NPs were characterized by means of ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopies, and the correlation of the NP properties with the laser beam profile was studied. Three different beam profiles were selected, namely, a Bessel beam produced using an axicon, an annular profile formed using a combination of an axicon and a converging lens, and a Gaussian beam focused on the surface of a Si target using the same converging lens.

This study introduces a methodology for analyzing light transmission and nanoparticle penetration in excised human corneas using multiphoton microscopy. By developing an accessible approach utilizing the laser from a confocal or multiphoton microscope for assessing corneal quality via light transmission, we measured transmission to be over 90% through corneal tissue across a wavelength range of 700-1060 nm. The method enables precise optical measurements crucial for validating tissue quality before further experimentation without the need for separate equipment.

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are increasingly used in applications across the biomedical domain, yet their long-term biodistribution and biocompatibility remain poorly understood. Conventional brightfield microscopy imaging techniques often fail to detect AuNPs due to optical diffraction limits and lack of chromogenic contrast. Understanding the biodistribution and ultimate fate of these nonbiodegradable NPs is crucial for further development of AuNP-based therapeutics and diagnostics.

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a new tomographic imaging technique that can quantitatively correlate MPI signal intensity to the spatial distribution of magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) tracers. Due to its non-ionizing nature, low background signal from biological matrices, high contrast, and relatively good spatial and temporal resolution, MPI has been actively studied and applied to biomedical imaging and is expected to reach the clinical stage soon. To further improve the spatial resolution limit in MPI, researchers have been working towards optimizing the image reconstruction algorithms, magnetic field profiles, tracer designs, circuitry, etc.
