Resources are rarely distributed uniformly within a population. Heterogeneity in the concentration of a drug, the quality of breeding sites, or wealth can all affect evolutionary dynamics. In this study, we represent a collection of properties affecting the fitness at a given location using a color. A green node is rich in resources while a red node is poorer. More colors can represent a broader spectrum of resource qualities. For a population evolving according to the birth-death Moran model, the first question we address is which structures, identified by graph connectivity and graph coloring, are evolutionarily equivalent. We prove that all properly two-colored, undirected, regular graphs are evolutionarily equivalent (where "properly colored" means that no two neighbors have the same color). We then compare the effects of background heterogeneity on properly two-colored graphs to those with alternative schemes in which the colors are permuted. Finally, we discuss dynamic coloring as a model for spatiotemporal resource fluctuations, and we illustrate that random dynamic colorings often diminish the effects of background heterogeneity relative to a proper two-coloring.

The Roundabout (Robo) family is an evolutionarily conserved group of axon guidance receptors that regulate midline crossing in a wide range of animal groups by signaling midline repulsion in response to Slit ligands. However, it is not known whether Robo receptors from different species signal midline repulsion via equivalent mechanisms. To examine the evolutionary conservation of midline repulsive signaling, here we express Robo family proteins from mouse in neurons of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.

-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) is a crucial enzymatic cofactor that is conserved across all domains of life. Despite the pivotal role of this cofactor, its chirality at the sulfonium sulfur and the differing biological activities of its epimers, (,)-SAM and (,)-SAM, are often overlooked. Although enzymes predominantly utilize the (,)-SAM epimer, due to spontaneous epimerization at the sulfonium sulfur of SAM, the (,)-SAM epimer is present in all cells as well as in commercial SAM-containing products.

We revisit the various definitions of an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS) in nonlinear population games from the standpoint of barrier functions. We show the equivalence between an ESS being uniformly uninvadable and the corresponding barrier function being lower semi-continuous (LSC). Moreover, it is sufficient to check this for strategies that are near an alternative best reply lying on an opposite face.
