The two most important bacterial phyla in the gastrointestinal tract, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, have gained much attention in recent years. The Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio is widely accepted to have an important influence in maintaining normal intestinal homeostasis. Increased or decreased F/B ratio is regarded as dysbiosis, whereby the former is usually observed with obesity, and the latter with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Probiotics as live microorganisms can confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts. There is considerable evidence of their nutritional and immunosuppressive properties including reports that elucidate the association of probiotics with the F/B ratio, obesity, and IBD. Orally administered probiotics can contribute to the restoration of dysbiotic microbiota and to the prevention of obesity or IBD. However, as the effects of different probiotics on the F/B ratio differ, selecting the appropriate species or mixture is crucial. The most commonly tested probiotics for modifying the F/B ratio and treating obesity and IBD are from the genus . In this paper, we review the effects of probiotics on the F/B ratio that lead to weight loss or immunosuppression.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a rising health issue linked to poor diet and gut microbiota dysbiosis. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, high in polyphenols and anti-inflammatory nutrients, may help protect against MASLD. This study examined how adherence to the MIND diet relates to MASLD severity, focusing on hepatic steatosis, fibrosis, insulin resistance, inflammation, and gut microbiota diversity.

This study investigates the effects of chitosan oligosaccharides (COSs) on cow's milk allergy (CMA), demonstrating its significant alleviation of CMA symptoms through intervention and prevention strategies. The finding highlights COS's immunoregulatory effects, particularly its influence on immunoglobulin E (IgE), immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1), and key cytokines such as IL-10, IL-17A, and IFN-γ. Additionally, COSs exhibited modulatory effects on gut microbiota, particularly in altering the Firmicutes/Bacteroidota (F/B) ratio.

Thiram, an environmentally persistent pesticide, poses significant hepatotoxic risks through oral exposure. However, the mechanisms linking gut dysbiosis to hepatic cell death remain unclear. Using a 5-week thiram exposure mouse model, we demonstrate that thiram-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis amplifies hepatotoxicity by disrupting the mitochondrial-autophagy-apoptosis axis via the gut-liver axis.

Gastrointestinal nematode infections elicit robust type 2 immune responses that facilitate rapid parasite expulsion. Our previous studies demonstrated that 18-month-old mice exhibit both impaired nematode clearance and reduced type 2-cytokine production, suggesting that aging diminishes the host's potential to mount effective immune defenses. To further investigate the underlying mechanisms, we compared young (3 months old) and aged mice (18 months old) infected with the nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Hp), focusing on the interplay between type 2 immune responses and intestinal ecology.
