As we push forward on understanding the fate of chemicals in the environment, we need a method that will allow for the simulation of the inherent heterogeneity. Density functional tight binding (DFTB) is a methodology that allows for a detailed electronic description and would be ideal for this problem. While many parameters can be derived directly from DFT, empirical parameters still exist in the confinement and repulsion potentials. In this manuscript, we examine these potentials and present solutions that will minimize the degree of empiricism. Our results show that it is possible to construct confinement potentials from examining the atomic radial wavefunctions. Moreover, we found that the heterogeneous repulsion potentials can be derived from using only homogeneous repulsion curves.

A behavioral defense against disease involves detecting sickness cues in others and responding adaptively, such as by avoiding social interactions. While studies have shown that humans can discriminate sickness cues above chance in faces after sickness induction, whether this discrimination affects approach-avoidance behaviors remains uncertain. Here, we investigated how facial sickness cues influence judgments of trustworthiness, serving as a proxy measure for social avoidance.

The perception of olfactory stimuli can influence animal emotions and behaviours, which are critical for survival and adaptation. This study explored the properties of three olfactory stimuli (orange essential oil, wolf faeces, and cadaverine) to induce emotion in sheep, in a non-stressful environment enriched with social and food resources. Contrary to expectations, wolf faeces, while repellent, did not trigger overt stress behaviours such as increased vocalisations or agitation.

Natural products have emerged as a vital source of active ingredients in medicine, food, and cosmetics due to their unique biological activities, safety profiles, and sustainability. However, most bioactive compounds in natural products are intensely bitter, limiting their use in pharmaceuticals and foods. The bitter taste attributes vary markedly among different compound classes, predominantly due to their structural characteristics.

Tussah pupa protein (TPP), rich in diverse bioactive components and demonstrating extensive physiological activities, has attracted attention in food processing. However, its limited emulsion stability restricts application potential, requiring improvement of techno-functional properties. The effects of myofibrillar protein (MP) compounding coupled with ultrasonic treatment on the emulsifying properties and nutritional value of TPP were systematically investigated from a multi-scale perspective in this study.

This study investigates the phenomenon of mode repulsion in Lamb waves propagating through two coupled plates with an elastic interface. Using a spring-based coupling model and the Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method, the dispersion curves of the coupled system are analyzed under various interface conditions-weak coupling, sliding boundary, and perfect coupling. This research highlights how the mechanical stiffness of the interface influences the separation of modes and the emergence of repulsion regions.
