Cephalopods represent an important pathway for mercury transfer through food webs. Due to the general difficulties in capturing oceanic squid, beaks found in the diet of top predators can be used to study their life-cycles and ecological role. Using upper beaks of the giant warty squid Moroteuthopsis longimana (major prey in the Southern Ocean), we describe a method to assess mercury concentrations along the life of cephalopods through the segmentary analysis of beak sections (i.e. tip of the rostrum and subsections along the hood). Distinct total mercury concentrations in the different subsections support that beaks can be used to study mercury levels in different periods of cephalopods' life-cycle. Mercury values in the anterior (1.3-7.9 μg kg dw) and posterior (7.8-12.5 μg kg dw) subsections of the hood reflect juvenile and adult stages, respectively. Furthermore, these results confirm that mercury bioaccumulates continuously throughout the individuals' life, with adults doubling their mercury concentrations to juveniles.

The development of on-site Hg analysers is crucial for the rapid evaluation of Hg concentrations in environmental research. However, the fabrication of Hg analysers requires simplification of analytical procedures and device miniaturisation. The use of mercury (Hg) in artisanal gold mining in San Martin de Loba (SML), Bolivar, Colombia, poses significant environmental and health risks. This study aimed to evaluate total mercury (T-Hg) concentrations in chicken feathers (Gallus gallus) and soils from SML, and compare them with those obtained in a reference site without mining activity (Arjona). This study explored the association between maternal blood lead, cadmium, mercury, and manganese concentrations during pregnancy and body mass index z-scores (zBMI), overweight, and obesity among children aged 0-4 years based on data from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). After data selection, 93,782 mother-child pairs were selected for analysis. Associations between prenatal metal exposure and obesity in children were explored using the generalized estimating equation (GEE), latent class growth analysis (LCGA), and quantile g-computation models.
