Seed macro- and micro-morphology were analyzed to evaluate their capacity to discriminate species in the genus Vicia (Fabaceae). To assess the interspecific variation of the taxa in the genus Vicia, 41 accessions were obtained from the USDA-ARS germplasm collection in the USA and 19 accessions were collected from Korea. Seed morphological characteristics such as shape, color, mottling, finish, length, width, diameter, hilum shape, hilum color, hilum length, and lens distance from the hilum were examined under a stereomicroscope. Testa texture characteristics such as testa pattern, papillae type, density, height, ribbing, surface deposits, and peaks topped with wax were examined under scanning electron microscopy. Various gross-morphological traits of seeds of Vicia species have been analyzed and compared. The present study revealed significant variation in testa traits. Testa were papillose and papillose with mounds, the latter being observed only in Vicia lathyroides. The present study revealed 20 key traits that could be used to diagnose Vicia species and classify them.

Background: Here, we describe AgMicrobiomeBase as an output of the UK Crop Microbiome Cryobank (UKCMCB) project, including details of the underlying meta-barcode sequence-based methods and three microbiome analysis case studies. The UKCMCB links genomic datasets and associated soil metadata with a cryobank collection of samples, for six economically significant crops: fava bean (Vicia faba), oil seed rape (Brassica napus), spring barley (Hordeum vulgare), spring oats (Avena sativa), spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). The crops were grown in nine agricultural soils from the UK, representing three major soil texture classes.

Our experiment was conducted to investigate the bacterial community structure and the main environmental factors affecting the distribution of endophytic bacteria in the nodules of Vicia villosa. 16S ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) gene sequence analysis revealed that the community compositions of endophytic bacteria in nodules from four rocky desertification (RD) areas were significantly correlated with the degree of RD. The effects of the physical and chemical properties of soil on community composition were analyzed.

Of the genus Phaseolus, fava beans are of great socio-economic importance to the Brazilian Northeast due to their nutritional profile and dryland cultivation. Legume cultivation has been threatened by environmental changes and processes of aridity and desertification around the world, especially in the semi-arid region of Brazil, which has high rainfall variability with irregular rainfall throughout the year. This research aimed to identify fava bean genotypes that are tolerant and susceptible to water deficit in seedlings.
