Background: Canine hypoadrenocorticism is an immune-mediated endocrinopathy that shares both clinical and pathophysiological similarities with Addison's disease in humans. Several dog breeds are overrepresented in the disease population, suggesting that a genetic component is involved, although this is likely to be polygenic. Previous research has implicated as a potential susceptibility gene. CTLA4 is an important regulator of T cell function and polymorphisms/mutations in have been associated with a number of autoimmune phenotypes in both humans and rodent models of autoimmunity. The aim of the current study was to undertake a case:control association study of promotor polymorphisms in three dog breeds, cocker spaniels, springer spaniels and West Highland white terriers (WHWT).
Results: Polymorphisms in the CTLA4 promoter were determined by PCR and sequence-based typing. There were significant associations with three promoter haplotypes in cocker spaniels ( = 0.003). A series of SNPs were also associated with hypoadrenocorticism in cocker spaniels and springer spaniels, including polymorphisms in predicted NFAT and SP1 transcription factor binding sites.
Conclusions: This study provides further evidence that promotor polymorphisms are associated with this complex genetic disease and supports an immune mediated aetiopathogenesis of canine hypoadrenocorticism.

Aldosterone concentrations were determined in 0 h- and 1 h samples of the ACTH-stimulation test. Total T4 concentration (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroglobuline antibodies (TgAA) were determined at 0 h and 1 h following the administration of ACTH.

Objective: To describe the clinical presentation of a dog with eunatremic, eukalemic hypoadrenocorticism (EEH) with multifocal, asymmetrical neurological signs.
Case Summary: A 7-year-old neutered male miniature Poodle presented for collapse, vomiting, and acute onset of neurological signs. The dog was obtunded and nonambulatory, with a right-sided head tilt and turn with rotary nystagmus.
Objective: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of the rapid point-of-care ELISA by IDEXX (SNAP) for detecting hypoadrenocorticism (HA) in dogs. A secondary aim was to evaluate the agreement between the SNAP and the veterinary reference laboratory (VRL) using chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (IMMULITE 2000) cortisol measurements. We hypothesized that the SNAP would correlate well with the VRL and aid in HA diagnosis.

This study presents a prospective evaluation of adrenal gland development in a cohort of Beagle puppies, utilizing sonographic imaging and functional assessment of the basal serum cortisol concentrations. The objective was to characterize the growth patterns and physiological maturation of the adrenal glands in dogs between six and twelve months of age. Ten Beagle puppies from two litters, bred and maintained under standardized conditions at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Hannover, were included in the study.

A 3 yr old intact male Doberman pinscher was referred with chronic diarrhea, severe polyuria-polydipsia, and behavioral changes for 2 wk. Biochemical abnormalities were consistent with central diabetes insipidus, hypothyroidism, and hypoadrenocorticism. Brain MRI and cerebrospinal fluid analysis raised suspicion for lymphocytic hypophysitis and meningitis, later confirmed histologically.
