Somatic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are frequently observed in tumors, yet their role in pediatric cancers remains poorly understood. The heteroplasmic nature of mtDNA-where mutant and wild-type mtDNA coexist-complicates efforts to define its contribution to disease progression.
