Article Abstract

During cyclic loading, localization of intragranular deformation due to crystallographic slip acts as a precursor for crack initiation, often at coherent twin boundaries. A suite of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray characterizations, coupled with a crystal plasticity simulation, was conducted on a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy microstructure near a parent-twin boundary in order to understand the deformation localization behavior of this critical, 3D microstructural configuration. Dark-field X-ray microscopy was spatially linked to high energy X-ray diffraction microscopy and X-ray diffraction contrast tomography in order to quantify, with cutting-edge resolution, an intragranular misorientation and high elastic strain gradients near a twin boundary. These observations quantify the extreme sub-grain scale stress gradients present in polycrystalline microstructures, which often lead to fatigue failure.

A carbohydrate placebo (CHO-PLA) is a non-metabolic substance guised as carbohydrate. When information about the treatment was not disclosed, CHO-PLA enhanced strength performance through the sweetness cue, which psychologically strengthened participants' belief in its efficacy. However, the effects of CHO-PLA when participants are misinformed that they are consuming actual carbohydrates, and the role of additional cues (visual reinforcement), remain less understood.

Introduction: Screw loosening remains a frequent mechanical complication in implant-supported prostheses, primarily caused by the gradual loss of abutment-screw preload. Background: Diagnosing the cause of undifferentiated left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in a patient with progressive heart failure symptoms can present a diagnostic challenge, with potential for both inherited and acquired aetiologies. Hydroxychloroquine-induced cardiomyopathy (HCQ-CM) is a rare complication of long-term hydroxychloroquine use. This case report highlights its clinical presentation, key differential diagnoses, and treatment strategies.

Heart failure (HF) is a progressive clinical syndrome characterised by insufficient cardiac output due to structural and functional abnormalities of the heart, which can then lead to breathlessness, fatigue and fluid overload. HF has an associated high morbidity and mortality rate as well as a significant impact on healthcare resources; for example, in the UK, it accounts for 5% of National Health Service (NHS) emergency admissions. This review focuses on pharmacological treatment of chronic HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), which affects approximately 60% of patients with HF.
