On December 11, 2018, a single unengorged adult tick was found on the body surface of the trunk of an imported wild-caught Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) during a routine health check in an animal clinic in Tokyo, Japan. The tick was identified as Amblyomma geayi based on the morphological and molecular characteristics. This is the first case of the introduction of an Amblyomma species to Japan via an imported pet sloth. The present study highlights the current loopholes in Japan's regulatory system for animal imports.

The trade and private ownership of non-domesticated animals has detrimental effects on individual animals and their wild populations. Therefore, there is a need to understand the conditions that motivate and dissuade interest in non-domesticated pet ownership. Past research has demonstrated that the way in which non-domesticated animals are portrayed in images influences the public's perception that they are suitable as pets.

We present frequency encoded upconversion (FE-UPCON) widefield microscopy, an imaging approach that allows for multiplexed signal recovery based on frequency encoding of selected upconverted lanthanide ion emission rather than separation based on energy or time. FE-UPCON allows for the separation of luminescence from spectrally and spatially overlapping trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln) in upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). Utilizing the numerous electronic energy levels of Ln, one can generate a frequency encoded signal by periodic coexcitation with a secondary light source (modulated at a chosen frequency) that, for a particular wavelength, enhances the luminescence of the Ln of interest.

Background: Treatment options for metastatic colon cancer (mCC) are widening. We prospectively evaluated serial 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and measurements of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and liberated domain I of urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR(I)) for early assessment of treatment response in mCC patients.
Methods: Thirty-three mCC patients scheduled for first-line chemotherapy with capecitabine and oxaliplatin (CAPOX) and bevacizumab participated; 27 were evaluated by PET/CT before treatment, after one and four treatment series.
