Transcription by RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) is a dynamic process with frequent variations in the elongation rate. However, the physiological relevance of variations in RNAPII elongation kinetics has remained unclear. Here we show in yeast that a RNAPII mutant that reduces the transcription elongation rate causes widespread changes in alternative polyadenylation (APA). We unveil two mechanisms by which APA affects gene expression in the slow mutant: 3' UTR shortening and gene derepression by premature transcription termination of upstream interfering noncoding RNAs. Strikingly, the genes affected by these mechanisms are enriched for functions involved in phosphate uptake and purine synthesis, processes essential for maintenance of the intracellular nucleotide pool. As nucleotide concentration regulates transcription elongation, our findings argue that RNAPII is a sensor of nucleotide availability and that genes important for nucleotide pool maintenance have adopted regulatory mechanisms responsive to reduced rates of transcription elongation.

Chitosan and tannin are both promising renewable materials for food packaging; however, their effectiveness is limited by incomplete interactions between them. Therefore, phytic acid and octadecylamine were employed to create chitosan-tannin-phytic acid-octadecylamine (CTPO) films that are flame-retardant, UV-resistant, antibacterial and hydrophobic for food packaging applications. The findings indicate that the CTPO film exhibited excellent hydrophobicity and mechanical properties, with a water contact angle of 133.

The recovery of lactic acid (LA) from the co-fermentation of food waste and waste activated sludge is shifting from feasibility studies to process optimization and predictive modeling. This study extends the widely used International Water Association Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1 (ADM1) by incorporating lactic acid bacteria-mediated pathways and adjusted stoichiometry to simulate LA generation from sugars, implemented in the GPS-X simulation platform.

To enhance the bioactivity and expand the application scope of Artemisia sphaerocephala Krasch polysaccharide gum (ASKG), it was sulfonated to yield sulfonated ASKG (S-ASKG). Using ASKG as a control, comparative analyses of the physicochemical properties and functional characteristics were performed. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the incidence, imaging characteristics, and clinical manifestations of the eruption failure of deciduous molars using panoramic radiographs to provide a foundation for diagnosis and treatment in this population.
Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed panoramic radiographs of children aged 4-8 years obtained from Stomatology Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine between January 2021 and December 2023. A total of 31 331 subjects were included for the radiographic assessment of the tooth eruption failure of deciduous molars.
