Article Abstract

The duration of the developmental period represents a fundamental axis of life-history variation, yet broad insights regarding the drivers of this diversity are currently lacking. Here, we test mechanistic and ecological explanations for the evolution of developmental duration using embryological data and information on incubation and fledging for 3096 avian species. Developmental phases associated primarily with growth are the longest and most variable, consistent with a role for allometric constraint in determining the duration of development. In addition, developmental durations retain a strong imprint of deep evolutionary history and body size differences among species explain less variation than previously thought. Finally, we reveal ecological correlates of developmental durations, including variables associated with the relative safety of the developmental environment and pressures of breeding phenology. Overall, our results provide broad-scale insight into the relative importance of mechanistic, ecological and evolutionary constraints in shaping the diversification of this key life-history trait.

Optimal Dosage Characteristics of Recasting for Developmental Language Disorder: A Scoping Review.

J Speech Lang Hear Res

September 2025

School of Health Sciences, College of Health and Medicine, University of Tasmania, Launceston, Australia.

Purpose: The purpose of this scoping review was to map and summarize currently available evidence about optimal dosage of recasting for developmental language disorder (DLD).

Method: A systematic search of databases was completed, including Web of Science, Medline via OvidSP, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Scopus. The inclusion criteria comprised the involvement of DLD intervention, the use of recasting alone or predominantly, and systematic manipulation of one or more dosage characteristics of recasting with the remaining parameters consistent across groups.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the potential contribution of subtle peripheral auditory dysfunction to listening difficulties (LiD) using a threshold-equalizing noise (TEN) test and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE). We hypothesized that a subset of patients with LiD have undetectable peripheral auditory dysfunction.

Design: This case-control study included 61 patients (12 to 53 years old; male/female, 18/43) in the LiD group and 22 volunteers (12 to 59 years old; male/female, 10/12) in the control group.

Optimizing timing and dose of exogenous melatonin administration in neuropsychiatric pediatric populations: a meta-analysis on sleep outcomes.

Sleep Med Rev

August 2025

Department of Developmental Neuroscience, IRCCS Stella Maris Foundation, Viale Del Tirreno. 341/A/B/C, Calambrone, Pisa, 56128 Italy; Department of Translational Research and of New Surgical and Medical Technologies, University of Pisa, Via Savi 10, 56126, Pisa, Italy.

Melatonin is known to be effective in improving sleep in pediatric patients affected by neurological and psychiatric conditions. However, no guidelines exist advising the most effective treatment schedule. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the dose, time of administration and treatment duration associated with the maximal treatment efficacy.

Social connection, a basic human need, is vital during adolescence. How a lack of connection impacts adolescent behaviour is unclear. To address this question, we employed experimental short-term isolation with and without access to virtual social interactions (iso total; iso with media; order counterbalanced, both compared to a separate baseline session).

Study Question: Can patient age and ovarian reserve tests predict the number of cryopreserved oocytes in patients undergoing one or more ovarian stimulation cycles for elective oocyte cryopreservation (EOC)?

Summary Answer: A predictive model incorporating patient age, antral follicle count (AFC), anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and FSH levels achieved the greatest predictive accuracy.

What Is Known Already: As a consequence of societal evolution, women are increasingly delaying starting a family. However, the natural decline in ovarian reserve and oocyte quality as age advances can increase the risk of age-related fertility decline (ARFD) and involuntary childlessness.
