Asteroid (3200) Phaethon is an active near-Earth asteroid and the parent body of the Geminid Meteor Shower. Because of its small perihelion distance, Phaethon's surface reaches temperatures sufficient to destabilize hydrated materials. We conducted rotationally resolved spectroscopic observations of this asteroid, mostly covering the northern hemisphere and the equatorial region, beyond 2.5-µm to search for evidence of hydration on its surface. Here we show that the observed part of Phaethon does not exhibit the 3-µm hydrated mineral absorption (within 2σ). These observations suggest that Phaethon's modern activity is not due to volatile sublimation or devolatilization of phyllosilicates on its surface. It is possible that the observed part of Phaethon was originally hydrated and has since lost volatiles from its surface via dehydration, supporting its connection to the Pallas family, or it was formed from anhydrous material.

On 27 August 2023 (UTC), a new organization for occultation observations in East Asia was formed, the International Occultation Timing Association/East Asia (IOTA/EA). The goal of this organization is to promote and disseminate occultation observations in the East Asia region and to make occultation observations a useful tool and a partner for planetary exploration missions and other scientific research. The formation of IOTA/EA was triggered by the stellar eclipse observation campaign of (3200) Phaethon, which is the target of the JAXA DESTINY[Formula: see text] mission.

We carry out a numerical study on the thermal behaviour of asteroid 3200 Phaethon, the parent body of the Geminid meteor shower. Phaethon's orbit is highly eccentric, with the perihelion distance as small as [Formula: see text]. During the perihelion passage the surface temperature rises so much that the reaction force of the thermal radiation from its surface affects Phaethon's orbital and spin motion.

The isotopic compositions of samples returned from Cb-type asteroid Ryugu and Ivuna-type (CI) chondrites are distinct from other carbonaceous chondrites, which has led to the suggestion that Ryugu/CI chondrites formed in a different region of the accretion disk, possibly around the orbits of Uranus and Neptune. We show that, like for Fe, Ryugu and CI chondrites also have indistinguishable Ni isotope anomalies, which differ from those of other carbonaceous chondrites. We propose that this unique Fe and Ni isotopic composition reflects different accretion efficiencies of small FeNi metal grains among the carbonaceous chondrite parent bodies.

Asteroid (3200) Phaethon experiences extreme solar radiant heating ( ~ 750 °C) during perihelion (0.14 au), leading to comet-like activity. The regolith composition and mechanism of volatile emission are unknown but key to understanding JAXA's DESTINY mission data (fly-by in 2029) and the fate of near-Sun asteroids more generally.

The DESTINY(Demonstration and Experiment of Space Technology for INterplanetary voYage with Phaethon fLyby and dUst Science) Dust Analyser (DDA) is a state-of-the-art dust telescope for the analysis of cosmic dust particles. As the primary scientific payload of the DESTINY mission, it serves the purpose of characterizing the dust environment within the Earth-Moon system, investigating interplanetary and interstellar dust populations at 1 AU from the Sun and studying the dust cloud enveloping the asteroid (3200) Phaethon. DDA features a two-axis pointing platform for increasing the accessible fraction of the sky.
