The effects of anticoagulant EDTA and sodium heparin (SH) on stable carbon δ C and nitrogen δ N isotopic values of red blood cells (RBC) and blood plasma in juvenile blacktip reef sharks Carcharhinus melanopterus were analysed. Plasma preserved with anticoagulants was not isotopically distinct from plasma stored in no-additive control tubes but RBC δ N values exhibited small enrichments when preserved with EDTA and SH. Results suggest EDTA and SH are viable anticoagulants for stable isotopic analyses of blood fractions but further studies are advised to validate results.

Current antithrombotic therapies face dual constraints of bleeding complications and monitoring requirements. Although natural hirudin provides targeted thrombin inhibition, its clinical adoption is hindered by sourcing limitations. This study developed a recombinant hirudin variant HMg (rHMg) with enhanced anticoagulant activity through genetic engineering and established cost-effective large-scale production methods.

Background: Copper is a vital trace element that plays a crucial role in various physiological processes due to its ability to exist in multiple oxidation states. Inspired by natural enzymes, researchers have developed copper-based nanozymes that mimic enzyme functions, offering cost-effective and stable alternatives to traditional enzymes. Despite their promising properties, the design and synthesis of these nanozymes can be complex and challenging.

Social wasps make up a significant part to the diversity of the Hymenoptera order, one of the most varied insect groups. Beyond their ecological importance, these insects use their venom for defense, protecting their colonies. The venom of social wasps are rich in biologically active substances, including biogenic amines, peptides, proteins, enzymes, allergens, and volatile compounds.

The construction of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) on gold coatings is one of the most effective strategies for bestowing anticoagulation and antimicrobial properties on the material. However, the poor chemical affinity between fluorinated porous precursors and gold substrates causes the agglomeration of nanostructures, resulting in uneven nanoporous morphology and accelerating lubricant leakage. Simultaneously, the weak interfacial adhesion between the nanostructures and the substrate may lead to the detachment of nanostructures under blood circulation.

Background: Medicare plans employ drug utilization management strategies, including prior authorization (PA) and step therapy (ST), or formulary tier increases, to control spending. However, PA and ST can delay treatment access and encourage use of less effective/safe therapies, while formulary tier increases can lead to treatment switching/discontinuation due to higher patient out-of-pocket costs. This study modeled the impact of restricted access to direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), and a tier increase for apixaban, on incidence and cost of clinical events in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in the United States.
