This study compared the effect of a snack with ingredients to slow carbohydrate digestion (Test-snack) on postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations and subjective appetite ratings. We hypothesized that Test-snack would lower glucose and insulin responses and reduce appetite compared with a Control-snack. Overweight or obese subjects ( = 17) completed a randomized crossover study. Glucose, insulin, and appetite ratings were measured before consuming each snack or white bread (Bread) and over a period of 4 h. Subjects received Test-snack, Control-snack, or Bread in random order at least a week apart. The primary outcome was the glucose response, and the secondary outcomes were appetite ratings and insulin responses. Mixed effects statistical models were used to perform analysis of variance in terms of the area under curve (AUC) and at specific time points. The 2-h AUC for glucose was significantly lower with Test-snack compared to Control-snack and Bread (AUC and 95% confidence intervals: Test = 2186.43 [1783.36-2589.51]; Control = 3293.75 [2893.97-3693.54]; Bread = 2800.28 [2405.79-3194.77] mg/dL · min). Four-hour AUC for glucose, and insulin, followed a similar pattern except that Test-snack did not differ from Bread. The glucose concentrations peaked at 45 min under all three conditions, but Test-snack elicited a lower response than Control-snack and Bread ( < .01). Test increased fullness and satisfaction and reduced hunger and prospective intake compared to Bread ( < .02), but was not significantly different from Control-snack. Ingredients that slow carbohydrate digestion in a snack reduce the postprandial glucose and insulin responses compared to a product without these ingredients.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with neuro-immune - metabolic - oxidative (NIMETOX) pathways.
Aims: To examine the connections among NIMETOX pathways in outpatient MDD (OMDD) with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS); and to determine the prevalence of NIMETOX aberrations in a cohort of OMDD patients.
Methods: We included 67 healthy controls and 66 OMDD patients and we assessed various NIMETOX pathways.

Study Question: Does weight loss from a hypocaloric dietary intervention improve antral follicle dynamics in women with PCOS?
Summary Answer: During a 3-month hypocaloric dietary intervention, women with PCOS who experienced clinically meaningful weight loss showed more organized antral follicle development including fewer recruitment events, but no change in the overall frequency of selection, dominance, or ovulation.
What Is Known Already: There is a spectrum of disordered antral follicle development in women with PCOS including excessive follicle recruitment and turnover, decreased frequency of selection and dominance, and failure of ovulation. Lifestyle intervention aimed at weight loss is recommended to improve metabolic health in women with PCOS yet benefits on ovarian follicle development and ovulation are unclear.

Methods: Thirty-two unacclimatized Soldiers (23±4yr; 80±14 kg) were tested at baseline residence (BLR), hiked ~5 km (n=16) or were driven (n=16) to 4,300 m, and stayed for 4 days (~66 h). Venous blood was taken each morning at BLR and during high altitude (HA) exposure days 2-4 (HA2-4) and the evening on day 1 at HA (HA1).

FGF21 is a hormone secreted from the liver in response to various nutritional stressors, suggested to be acting to balance dietary intake through negative feedback regulation. This meal study aimed to investigate two different potential nutrient interactions on postprandial FGF21 secretion in healthy human participants: 1) between intake of alcohol and protein and 2) between intake of alcohol and vitamin A (retinol). In a 4-arm, randomized, double-blinded, cross-over meal study (NCT06105476), postprandial circulating concentrations of FGF21, glucose, insulin, ethanol, and acetate were compared after intake of four different test drinks containing alcohol, alcohol+protein, alcohol+retinol or retinol in 27 healthy humans.

Unlabelled: Despite stimulating glucagon secretion, the mechanisms by which protein ingestion lowers glucose excursions remain unclear. We investigated this using the triple stable isotope glucose tracer technique to measure postprandial glucose fluxes. Eleven healthy adults completed three trials, ingesting 25 g glucose (25G; 100 kcal), 50 g glucose (50G; 200 kcal), or 25 g glucose plus 25 g whey protein (25WG; 200 kcal).
