The certification of death due to mechanical asphyxia has been a complex problem in some cases. The use of protein expression to identify mechanical asphyxia death has recently attracted attention. Asphyxia creates an extremely hypoxic environment for cells, which should reactivate the mitochondria in the cells. Cyto c and AIF, located in the mitochondria, are transferred to the cytoplasm under hypoxia to trigger the apoptotic process. Based this phenomenon, we designed the animal asphyxia model and cell hypoxia model to examine whether Cyto c and AIF are expressed in the cytoplasm, and we used human samples to verify the results. We found that the two proteins were detectably expressed in the cytoplasm of mechanical asphyxia groups and were hardly detected in the cytoplasm of other groups. This is a promising finding that may shed light on the precise mechanisms associated with mechanical asphyxia.

Background: For over half a century, the administration of maternal corticosteroids before anticipated preterm birth has been regarded as a cornerstone intervention for enhancing neonatal outcomes, particularly in preventing respiratory distress syndrome. Ongoing research on antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) is continuously refining the evidence regarding their efficacy and potential side effects, which may alter the application of this treatment. Recent findings indicate that in resource-limited settings, the effectiveness of ACS is contingent upon meeting specific conditions, including providing adequate medical support for preterm newborns.

Atresia is the most common congenital anomaly of the esophagus, with an increased risk of complications after surgical correction. The aim of our study was to evaluate the risk factors associated with early and late postoperative complications in neonatal patients with esophageal atresia. Neonatal osteomyelitis and septic arthritis are rare but serious conditions that can arise in the first few weeks of life. The main risk factors for neonatal bone and joint infections include chorioamnionitis, perinatal asphyxia, prematurity, sepsis, invasive lines and procedures, mechanical ventilation, urinary tract infection and skin lesions. The risk factors related to birth trauma like breech delivery and nerve palsies of the upper extremity have been described but are relatively uncommon.

Asphyxiating thoracic dysplasia (ATD), also known as Jeune syndrome, is a rare and serious genetic condition; its incidence in adult populations is even rarer. A 25-year-old male had a 10-year history of chest wall deformity and progressive dyspnoea. A complex chest wall reconstruction, along with the excision of bone tumours, was performed in view of critical hypoxia.
