Several cases of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), particularly the moderate to severe ones, are considered intractable by traditional therapy. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy has emerged as a new choice for management of MGD in recent years, given that use of lasers and optical treatments is typically challenging in patients with darker skin types. IPL treatment for MGD is administered in the periorbital area with the thinnest skin in our body, which has an inherent risk of skin side effects. We evaluated the effects and safety of this therapy in Chinese patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III-IV. Forty MGD patients were randomly administered IPL treatment with two types of parameters in the left and the right eye. Results revealed that both parameter settings of IPL treatment could gradually and effectively raise the tear breakup time (BUT) and ocular surface disease index (OSDI) score. However, younger patients showed better improvement in BUT ( = 19.54, < 0.01) and OSDI ( = 9.93, < 0.01) compared with older patients. Overall, results showed that IPL treatment is safe and effective in MGD patients with skin types III-IV.

Mast cell tumors (MCTs) are the most common skin neoplasms in dogs and exhibit highly variable biological behavior. Metastasis primarily affects the lymph nodes, though less frequently, MCTs can infiltrate the spleen, liver, peripheral blood, and bone marrow. Flow cytometry of fine needle aspirate samples represents a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that has shown promise for detecting and quantifying mast cells in primary tumors and lymph nodes.

Introduction: Pilots have an increased incidence of cutaneous melanoma compared to the general population; occupational exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of several potential risk factors. Cockpit windshields effectively block UVB (280-315 nm) but further analysis is needed for UVA (315-400 nm). The objective of this observational study was to assess transmission of UVA through cockpit windshields and to measure doses of UVA at pilots' skin under daytime flying conditions.
