Article Abstract

This study developed the interests of low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) together with plasticizers for the preparation of elastic thin films. The effect of different plasticizer types (glycerol: Gly; sorbitol: Sor; propylene glycol: PG; and polyethylene glycol 300: PEG 300) and concentrations (20⁻40% ) on mechanical and thermal properties of LMP films as well as on in vitro release of indomethacin were evaluated. Without any plasticizer, a brittle LMP film with low tensile strength and % elongation at break was obtained. Addition of plasticizers from 20% to 40% caused reduction in the tensile strength and Young's modulus values, whereas percent elongation was increased. Forty percent Gly-plasticized and PG-plasticized films were selected to deliver indomethacin in comparison with non-plasticized film. No significant difference in indomethacin release profiles was displayed between the films. The analysis of indomethacin release model indicated that more than one drug release mechanism from the film formulation was involved and possibly the combination of both diffusion and erosion. Even though indomethacin incorporated in non-plasticized film showed similar release profile, Gly or PG should be added to enhanced film flexibility and decrease film brittleness.

Indomethacin is a poorly soluble weak acid and a widely used model drug in enabling formulations. When using microdialysis for sampling of indomethacin from a buffer containing calcium, we observed the formation of nanoparticles of a poorly water-soluble indomethacin calcium salt. The nanoparticles were not detected during solubility experiments where filtration had been used to separate the solid phase because the nanoparticles were unusually small in size, less than 2 nm in diameter as determined by DLS.

The COVID-19 pandemic worsened global food insecurity and malnutrition. Protein restriction increases the risk of poor COVID-19 outcomes and cardiovascular disease. Post-COVID-19 syndrome remains a public health concern, although its underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood.

The side chain modification of apple pectin was carried out to enhance its usablitity as a drug carrier. During the sequential drug release, indomethacin released with very low rate in the early two hours in artificial gastric juice, and then it released with much higher rate in the next six hours in artificial intestinal juice. Among all the tested samples, glycine-pectin complex showed the highest difference between the amount of cumulative drug release in artificial gastric juice and artificial intestinal juice.

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), which are commonly used to manage pain and inflammation, often cause gastrointestinal injuries, including small intestinal damage. Berberine (BBR) is a traditional Chinese medicine that protects against these injuries. However, the mechanism of action is not fully understood.
