Article Abstract

Background And Objective: We investigated the repeatability and validity of the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) distance compared to peak oxygen uptake (VO ) during maximal incremental cycle ergometer (ICE) and treadmill (ITM) tests in adults with severe asthma.

Methods: Adults with severe asthma, Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnoea ≥2, were recruited from specialists caring for patients with severe asthma. All participants performed three ISWT (familiarization and two subsequent tests on the same day), an ICE and an ITM in a randomized order, on separate days, to intolerance with expiratory gas analysis.

Results: A total of 50 patients (32 females, mean (SD), age: 54 (13) years, forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV ): 1.9 (0.8) L and body mass index (BMI): 32 (6) kg/m ) completed all five tests. The mean (SD) ISWT distance for each test was 400 (156), 418 (142) and 438 (157) m (P = 0.001), respectively. There was a strong correlation between the ISWT distance with VO derived from ITM (r = 0.74, P < 0.001) and ICE (r = 0.75, P < 0.001).

Conclusion: There was a small increase in the mean ISWT distance on sequential testing. In clinical practice, the coefficient of repeatability and heteroscedasticity need to be considered when assessing whether a true change has occurred within an individual patient. The ISWT has validity compared to VO on both ICE and ITM, but they are not interchangeable.

Assessment of exercise capacity is useful in monitoring patients and planning a rehabilitation program for subjects with pulmonary hypertension (PH). No study has investigated the relationship of different field tests, except for the six-minute walk test (6MWT), with balance, activities of daily living (ADL), and quality of life (QoL) in subjects with PH. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of different field tests with balance, ADL, and QoL in subjects with PH.

Energy intake, body mass index and functional capacity of patients in a cardiovascular rehabilitation program.

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Escola de Enfermagem, Programa de Pós-Graduação Em Nutrição e Saúde, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) impact individuals' quality of life, mainly due to their effects on functional capacity. Nutritional interventions are crucial for enhancing functional capacity in patients undergoing cardiovascular rehabilitation (CR) program. The energy consumption of patients with CVD warrants careful attention, particularly with regard to the quality of this energy, to prevent worsening CVD or developing other metabolic complications.

Importance: The minimum important difference (MID) for field walking tests aims to improve interpretation of outcomes, but the volume and heterogeneity of MIDs for these tests is challenging. We aimed to determine the MID for the 6-min walk distance (6MWD), incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) and endurance shuttle walk test (ESWT) in adults with long-term conditions.

Methods: This systematic review included studies that generated a MID using an anchor-based approach in patients with long-term conditions for the 6MWD, ISWT or ESWT field walking tests.

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, School of Medicine, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, Sichuan, People's Republic of China.

Objective: To compare the effects of nutritional supplements on lung function and exercise tolerance in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on nutritional supplements in COPD patients, with the search ending December 31, 2023. Two authors independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed quality using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.

Purpose: The decline in physical fitness during neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) impacts postoperative pneumonia and survival in older patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (LAEC). However, information is lacking on the clinical mechanisms underlying the decline in physical fitness during NAC in older patients. This study investigated the factors responsible for the decline in physical fitness during NAC in older patients with LAEC.
