Article Abstract

In this study, a new electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of cefalexin (CFX), based on the use of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) obtained by electro‒polymerization in an aqueous medium of indole-3-acetic acid (I3AA) on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and on boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE). The two different electrodes were used in order to assess how their structural differences and the difference in the potential applied during electrogeneration of the MIP translate to the performances of the MIP sensor. The quantification of CFX was performed by using the electrochemical signal of a redox probe before and after the rebinding of the template. The modified electrode was characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The influence of different parameters on the fabrication of the sensor was tested, and the optimized method presented high selectivity and sensitivity. The MIP-based electrode presented a linear response for CFX concentration range of 10 to 1000 nM, and a limit of detection of 3.2 nM and 4.9 nM was obtained for the BDDE and the GCE, respectively. The activity of the sensor was successfully tested in the presence of some other cephalosporins and of other pharmaceutical compounds. The developed method was successfully applied to the detection of cefalexin from real environmental and pharmaceutical samples.

This study demonstrates a biosensing platform facilitated by localized surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) on a silicon (Si) nanopillar metasurface mediated by the presence of cephalexin (Cef) antibiotics in solution. The metasurface is designed to exhibit narrow quadrupolar Mie resonances that when coupled with bovine serum albumin-coated (BSA-coated) plasmonic gold nanospheres (BSANS) will produce an appreciable redshift at the peak resonance wavelength, occurring only in the presence of the target antibiotic. To optimize the performance of the Si nanopillars, the finite element method is utilized to fine-tune their diameters, heights, and periodicity, along with improvements to the fabrication techniques, under the BSANS-antibiotic binding assay.

Contarini's syndrome refers to the occurrence of bilateral pleural effusion which has different causes for each hemithorax. Based on extensive literature search, this is a rare finding and to date, only two published cases have recorded tuberculous effusion on one side. In this paper, the authors aim to present a case of Contarini's syndrome, and to give emphasis that such condition with different etiologies exists and should be considered in managing bilateral effusion.

() is an opportunistic pathogen widely distributed in nature, and multi-drug resistance (MDR) has been widely recognized as a critical reservoir of resistance genes, posing severe health threats to humans and animals. A total of 288 strains were isolated and purified from fresh fecal samples of forest musk deer collected from farms in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Yunnan Provinces of China between 2013 and 2023. This study aimed to conduct antibiotic susceptibility testing and resistance gene detection on the isolated forest musk deer-derived , analyze the correlations between them, investigate the presence of CRISPR systems within the strains, and perform bioinformatics analysis on the CRISPR systems carried by the strains.

Background: Antibiotic resistance (ABR) to commonly used antibiotics is significant in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In SSA, Chad has one of the highest antimicrobial resistance (AMR) rates. The link between ABR and antibiotic consumption (ABC) is well-established.

The need for doxycycline detection is urgent because it is a vital antibiotic extensively utilized to combat bacterial diseases in humans and animals, and it is now at the forefront of the global battle against antibiotic resistance. Our research introduces an absorbance biosensor that employs chitosan-capped ZnS nanoparticles doped with manganese without an enzyme to address this critical need. Our study highlights the sensor's robust performance with nearly 100% recovery and stability over time to detect doxycycline from 0 to 72.
