Article Abstract

Scientists have advocated for local interventions, such as creating marine protected areas and implementing fishery restrictions, as ways to mitigate local stressors to limit the effects of climate change on reef-building corals. However, in a literature review, we find little empirical support for the notion of managed resilience. We outline some reasons for why marine protected areas and the protection of herbivorous fish (especially parrotfish) have had little effect on coral resilience. One key explanation is that the impacts of local stressors (e.g., pollution and fishing) are often swamped by the much greater effect of ocean warming on corals. Another is the sheer complexity (including numerous context dependencies) of the five cascading links assumed by the managed-resilience hypothesis. If reefs cannot be saved by local actions alone, then it is time to face reef degradation head-on, by directly addressing anthropogenic climate change-the root cause of global coral decline.

In January 2019, the state of Minas Gerais was struck by an environmental tragedy resulting from the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão Mine Dam, in Brumadinho. On this occasion, the Military Fire Brigade of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) designated specialized teams for emergency intervention, in aid of agents from the local corporation involved in providing care and support to victims and residents of the affected areas. However, these professionals were exposed to mud containing substances that cause harm to health.

Robust Antifogging and Antifouling Coating Tailored with Zwitterionic Nanocellulose for Multi-Functional Applications.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

September 2025

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Membrane Science and Desalination Technology, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin, 300072, P. R. China.

Biofouling often occurs simultaneously with fogging, presenting significant challenges to visibility, safety, and operational efficiency. The development of biocompatible coatings that offer both antifouling performance and stability under fogging conditions is highly sought after. A method to form multifunctional coatings is presented, utilizing a zwitterionic nanocellulose composite material that demonstrates both antifogging and antifouling properties, suitable for application on various surfaces.

Although the surface micro-ornamentation of the scales within the skin of snakes has been the subject of many previous studies, there has been little work done on the spectacle, a protective (keratinised) goggle separated from the underlying cornea by a sub-spectacular space. The surface ultrastructure of the "Oberhäutchen" of the spectacle is examined in nine species of snakes (five aquatic and four terrestrial) using light and electron microscopy, micro-computed tomography and gel-based profilometry. Significant topographic differences in cell size (increases of between 5.

Tahiti or the "myth of Paradise", Bora Bora, "the Pearl of the Pacific". Who has never wanted to take a plane and come and land on the heavenly beaches of Polynesia, a French territory at the antipodes of mainland France lost in the middle of the Pacific? However, we do not imagine that 60% of Polynesians live below the metropolitan low-income threshold or that life expectancy is lower than that of the mainland due to the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases with three quarters overweight population. In addition to non-transmissible metabolic diseases, various pathologies common to temperate countries present specificities in Polynesia, leading to sometimes different management and medical reasoning.

Optimal cerium microalloying enhances SASS/Q235 weld corrosion and antibacterial performance.

Super austenitic stainless steels (SASS) face challenges like galvanic corrosion and antibacterial performance when welded to carbon steel (Q235) in marine environments. This study demonstrates that adding 1.0 wt% cerium (Ce) to SASS refines the heat-affected zone (HAZ) grain structure (from 7 μm to 2 μm), suppresses detrimental σ-phase precipitation, and forms a dense oxide film.
