A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated 9-2-1-1, was isolated from apple orchard soil in Daegu, Republic of Korea. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate belongs to the family Cytophagaceae, Bacteroidetes and it is most closely related to Hymenobacter metalli A2-91 (97.8% similarity) and Hymenobacter marinus KJ035 (96.6%). Growth of strain 9-2-1-1 was observed at 4-30 °C, pH 6-8, and in the presence of 0-1.0% NaCl. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 62.0 mol%. The predominant respiratory quinone of the isolate was MK-7; the major fatty acids were C iso (29.3%), Cω5c (15.4%), C anteiso (12.5%), summed feature 3 (Cω7c/Cω6c; 12.3%), and C (10.6%); and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. The phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data supported the affiliation of strain 9-2-1-1 with the genus Hymenobacter. However, the DNA-DNA relatedness between the isolate and H. metalli and H. marinus were 31.3% and 24.7%, respectively. The DNA-DNA hybridization result and the differentiating phenotypic properties clearly indicate that strain 9-2-1-1 is the representative of a novel species in the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter pomorum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 9-2-1-1 (=KCTC 52740 = JCM 32193).

Strain HMF4947, isolated from the bark of a ginkgo tree, was a pale-pink coloured, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, strictly aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium. The isolate grew optimally on Reasoner's 2A agar at 30 °C, pH 7.0 and with 0 % NaCl.

The strain and strain-rate measures are commonly used for the analysis and assessment of regional myocardial function. In echocardiography (EC), the strain analysis became possible using Tissue Doppler Imaging (TDI). Unfortunately, this modality shows an important limitation: the angle between the myocardial movement and the ultrasound beam should be small to provide reliable measures.

Background/aims: Raised cytokine levels and a hypoperfusion-associated decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) are hallmarks of the genesis of septic acute renal failure (ARF). Therefore, anti-inflammatory as well as renal vasodilating therapeutic strategies may afford renal protection during septic ARF. The present study was designed to determine the effects of administration of urodilatin, pentoxifylline and theophylline to improve renal function in an ex-vivo model of 'septic renal injury'.

Background: Gastroenteritis is a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Rotavirus, human caliciviruses (HucV), adenovirus, and astrovirus are recognized as common etiologies of acute gastroenteritis.
Objectives: To use antigen detection and molecular methods to determine the viral etiology of childhood diarrhea in Lanzhou, China, 2005-2007.
