Article Abstract

Purpose: To obtain insights on the protein composition of posterior capsular plaques (PCP) in congenital unilateral cataract with anterior vitreolenticular interface dysgenesis (AVLID).

Methods: Posterior capsular plaque's were collected during surgery in children presenting with congenital unilateral cataract. Surgeries were analysed focusing on the type of cataract, the integrity of the posterior capsule after peeling the PCP and the presence of vitreolenticular adherences when performing primary posterior capsulorhexis. Proteome analysis was performed on the collected PCPs.

Results: Posterior capsular plaques collection and proteome analysis were feasible from four children presenting with unilateral idiopathic congenital cataract and AVLID. A large portion of the proteins found in the PCPs was similar to the proteins known to be present in lens epithelial cells and fibres. Proteins like vimentin, fibronectin, collagen type I, collagen type VI and lumican were also found, which typically are present in mesenchymal tissue but not in lens tissue or capsule.

Conclusion: Posterior capsular plaques in cases of unilateral idiopathic congenital cataract of the AVLID type present a protein composition of mainly proteins found in lens epithelial cells and fibres. Some proteins however are a specific for lens tissue and are typically seen in mesenchymal tissue.

Background: While there have been many advances in the treatment of labral pathology in the hip over the past decade, there are still questions regarding the treatment of chondral lesions in the hip. In this video, we highlight one such technique for harvesting and using bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) during hip arthroscopy.

Indications: BMAC as supplementation is indicated for patients with hip chondrolabral pathology in the setting of femoroacetabular impingement.

Purpose: To assess the real-world distance and intermediate visual outcomes, rotational stability, and adverse events (AEs) of patients implanted with a Clareon aspheric monofocal toric intraocular lens (IOL) preloaded in the AutonoMe delivery system (Alcon, USA; models CNA0T2 to CNA0T6) up to one-month postoperative.

Methods: Surgical charts from January 2021 to October 2023 were reviewed for adult patients (≥18 years) who previously received a CNA0T2 to CNA0T6 (T2 to T6) IOL during uneventful cataract surgery and were targeted for emmetropia/first minus. Overall, charts from 193 eyes of 121 patients were screened, with 161 eyes of 107 patients included in the study.

Neodymium-doped:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy is considered the gold standard treatment for visually significant posterior capsule opacification (PCO), which remains the most common long-term complication following cataract surgery. However, Nd:YAG laser treatment carries the risk of inducing intraocular lens (IOL) damage, including pits, cracks, and optical degradation, particularly affecting the quality of premium hydrophobic acrylic and small-aperture IOLs. To systematically review the morphology, material dependence, optical, and clinical consequences, as well as preventive strategies associated with Nd:YAG laser-induced IOL damage.

Institutional comparison of methods of intraoperative cataract surgery complication reporting.

J Cataract Refract Surg

August 2025

John Moran Eye Center, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of surgeon self-reporting and anterior vitrector equipment billing in identifying intraoperative posterior capsular tears (PCT) with vitreous loss during cataract surgery. A total of 19,258 cataract surgeries performed over six years at the John A. Moran Eye Center were analyzed, with 343 potential complications identified through billing or self-reporting, and 193 confirmed PCT cases based on chart review.
