Poor bioavailability of ophthalmic drops is mainly due to drainage through the nasal-lacrimal duct and a very low permeability through corneal epithelium. The aim of our study was to prepare and characterize an ocular hydrogel of loratadine, as an example of a lipophilic drug, to increase drug concentration and residence time at the site of action in the eye. In this study, a 2 full factorial design was employed to design and compare the properties of eight different loratadine containing hydrogel formulations. Results showed a significant correlation between the swelling and porosity ratios of the hydrogels and the Pluronic percentage and Pluronic/carbomer ratio in the formulations. Moreover, the release profiles showed fast and sustained release of all the formulations. Evaluation of hydrogels structure by the FT-IR technique indicated that Pluronic interacts with hydroxyl and carboxylic groups in carbomer, which is the main reason of the hydrogel network formation and interacts with loratadine. The permeation of loratadine through rabbit cornea showed that drug permeation percentages for the F2 and F7 formulations were 15 and 70 folds more than that of the control.

Purpose: This study reports the changes in aqueous humor dynamics (AHD) and biometric parameters associated with growth and maturation in male Dutch-belted rabbits.
Methods: In this prospective observational study, 20 male Dutch-belted rabbits were studied at 4-weekly intervals starting at 10 weeks through 38 weeks of age. Data collected included intraocular pressure (IOP), aqueous flow, outflow facility by tonography and fluorophotometry (acetazolamide method), episcleral venomanometry, central corneal thickness, corneal diameter, anterior chamber depth, and testicular volume.

Purpose: To evaluate Periplaneta americana extract (PAE) effects on corneal epithelial healing and fibrosis after superficial lamellar keratectomy (SLK) in rabbits.
Methods: SLK was performed on the right eyes of 48 New Zealand White rabbits, randomized into three treatment groups (n = 16/group): normal saline (NS), Tobradex eye drops (TE), and PAE group. Corneal opacity and epithelial defect area were quantified using slit-lamp imaging at postoperative days 3, 7, 14, and 28 (D3, D7, D14, and D28) and scored via the grading system.

Pro-regenerative corneal implants are being developed to improve corneal healing for companion animals in clinical practice. This pilot study evaluated early corneal tissue and nerve regeneration using biosynthetic collagen-analog hydrogels (CAH) in liquid and solid forms. Their efficacy was compared to each other and to allografts on nine white New Zealand rabbits, divided in three groups of three.

Objective: To measure the steady-state corneal biomechanical properties related to postoperative corneal ectasia, keratoconus, glaucoma and other ophthalmic diseases, we propose a novel in vivo measurement method.
Methods: By precisely manipulating ambient negative pressure via a suction device to achieve controlled in vivo corneal inflation, we analyzed the coupling relationship between corneal deformation response and negative pressure loading. The displacement corresponding to the corneal initial configuration under 0 mmHg was extrapolated.
