The latest major group of plants to evolve were the grasses. These became important in the mid-Paleogene about 40 million years ago. During evolution, leaf CO uptake and transpirational water loss were optimized by the acquisition of grass-specific stomatal complexes. In contrast to the kidney-shaped guard cells (GCs) typical of the dicots such as Arabidopsis, in the grasses and agronomically important cereals, the GCs are dumbbell shaped and are associated with morphologically distinct subsidiary cells (SCs). We studied the molecular basis of GC action in the major cereal crop barley. Upon feeding ABA to xylem sap of an intact barley leaf, stomata closed in a nitrate-dependent manner. This process was initiated by activation of GC SLAC-type anion channel currents. HvSLAC1 expressed in Xenopus oocytes gave rise to S-type anion currents that increased several-fold upon stimulation with >3 mM nitrate. We identified a tandem amino acid residue motif that within the SLAC1 channels differs fundamentally between monocots and dicots. When the motif of nitrate-insensitive dicot Arabidopsis SLAC1 was replaced by the monocot signature, AtSLAC1 converted into a grass-type like nitrate-sensitive channel. Our work reveals a fundamental difference between monocot and dicot GCs and prompts questions into the selective pressures during evolution that resulted in fundamental changes in the regulation of SLAC1 function.

An designed benzodioxin fused analogue of a des-(1-hydroxyethyl)-lincomycin analogue was synthesized in a asymmetric fashion from an achiral acylfuran, a 4-(-Pr)--methyl-proline, and catechol. The synthesis of the 6-amino-galactose portion of the lincomycin analogue necessitated the development of a novel stereospecific tandem Pd-glycosylation/1,4-addition reaction between catechol and an -Cbz-protected 6-amino-pyranone with a Pd-π-allyl leaving group at the -1 position. The desired -stereochemistry was installed by a subsequent stereoselective ketone reduction, alcohol elimination, and diastereoselective dihydroxylation of the -3/4 alkene.

The pods of Neltuma species have been traditionally used as nutrient-rich sources of food ingredients. However, Neltuma affinis, a native species of South America, remains understudied. This work aimed to produce and characterize powders from different pod fractions (specifically, the endocarp-seeds (ESF) and epicarp-mesocarp (EMF) fractions) by dry grinding, evaluating their physicochemical, nutritional, functional, and cytotoxic properties.

SC05-UT is an anaerobic, heterogenous microbial enrichment culture that reduces chloroform to dichloromethane through reductive dechlorination, which it further mineralizes to carbon dioxide. This dichloromethane mineralization yields electron equivalents that are used to reduce chloroform without the addition of exogenous electron donor. By studying this self-feeding chloroform-amended culture and a dichloromethane-amended enrichment subculture (named DCME), we previously found the genomic potential to perform both biodegradation steps in two distinct strains: SAD and Dehalobacter alkaniphilus DAD.

The hydrocoral (fire coral) plays a critical role in reef structure and relies on a symbiotic relationship with Symbiodiniaceae algae. Environmental stressors derived from climate change, such as UV radiation and elevated temperatures, disrupt this symbiosis, leading to bleaching and threatening reef survival. To gain insight into the thermal stress response of this reef-building hydrocoral, this study investigates the proteomic response of to bleaching during the 2015-2016 El Niño event.

Energy metabolism manipulation strategy, enhancing fat metabolism while reducing the dependence on glucose, is beneficial to improve exercise performance. The multi-ingredient supplements (MIS) mixed with valine, isoleucine, leucine, β-alanine, creatine, L-carnitine, quercetin, and betaine were found to be able to improve the endurance performance of mice, which was associated with a shift of energy substrates from glucose to fatty acids. Thus, we hypothesized that the MIS regulating lipid metabolism contributes to enhancing exercise endurance in mice.
