Article Abstract

Chiral spin textures of a ferromagnetic layer in contact to a heavy non-magnetic metal, such as Néel-type domain walls and skyrmions, have been studied intensively because of their potential for future nanomagnetic devices. The Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is an essential phenomenon for the formation of such chiral spin textures. In spite of recent theoretical progress aiming at understanding the microscopic origin of the DMI, an experimental investigation unravelling the physics at stake is still required. Here we experimentally demonstrate the close correlation of the DMI with the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment and with the magnetic dipole moment of the ferromagnetic metal in addition to Heisenberg exchange. The density functional theory and the tight-binding model calculations reveal that inversion symmetry breaking with spin-orbit coupling gives rise to the orbital-related correlation. Our study provides the experimental connection between the orbital physics and the spin-orbit-related phenomena, such as DMI.

Although magnetic frustration in metals provides a promising avenue for novel quantum phenomena, their microscopic interpretation is often challenging. Here, we use the face-centered cubic intermetallic HoInCu_{4} as model material to show that Hamiltonians neglecting the charge degree of freedom are appropriate for frustrated metals possessing low density of states at the Fermi surface. Through neutron scattering techniques we determine matching magnetic exchange interactions in the paramagnetic and field-polarized states using an effective spin-1 Heisenberg Hamiltonian, for which we identify antiferromagnetic nearest and next-nearest-neighbor interactions J_{1} and J_{2} that are close to the critical ratio J_{2}/J_{1}=1/2.

Electrically Switchable Topological Magnetic Phase Transition in 2D Multiferroics.

Nano Lett

School of Physics, State Key Laboratory of Crystal Materials, Shandong University, Shandanan Str. 27, Jinan 250100, China.

Phase transitions between different topological spin structures represent a captivating class of phenomena that have attracted tremendous interest due to their rich physics and promising applications. However, existing methodologies for their realization and manipulation remain confined to a conventional vertical magnetic-field reversal mechanism. By combining first-principles calculations with atomistic spin simulations, we report a novel electrically driven topological magnetic phase transition in van der Waals multiferroic heterobilayer NiSeCl/ScCO.

Ultrafast spin dynamics: role of laser-induced modification of exchange parameters.

J Phys Condens Matter

Department of Chemistry/Phys. Chemistry, LMU Munich, Butenandtstrasse 11, D-81377 Munich, Germany.

Induced by an ultra-short laser pulse, the electronic structure of a material undergoes strong modifications leading to a fast demagnetization in magnetic materials. Induced spin-flip transitions are one of the reasons for demagnetization, that is associated in the literature with a Stoner-like mechanism. On the other hand, demagnetization due to transverse spin fluctuations is usually discussed on the basis of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and hardly accounts for the modification of the electronic structure.

Density-functional Green function theory: dynamical exchange-correlation field in lieu of self-energy.

The one-particle Green function of a many-electron system is traditionally formulated within the self-energy picture. A different formalism was recently proposed, in which the self-energy is replaced by a dynamical exchange-correlation field, which acts on the Green function locally in both space and time. It was found that there exists a fundamental quantity, referred to as the dynamical exchange-correlation hole, which can be interpreted as effective density fluctuations induced in a many-electron system when a hole or an electron is introduced into the system, as in photoemission and inverse photoemission experiments.

Frustrated spin systems, where competing interactions prevent conventional magnetic ordering, provide a platform for uncovering emergent quantum phases and exotic many-body phenomena. Particularly, low-dimensional and symmetric geometries without boundary conditions allow us to study unconventional spin states. Here, we present = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg cyclic pentamer and hexamer via homocoupling of air-stable phenalenyl derivatives on Au(111).
