Nucleophilic substitution results in inversion of configuration at the electrophilic carbon center (S 2) or racemization (S 1). The stereochemistry of the nucleophile is rarely considered, but phosphines, which have a high barrier to pyramidal inversion, attack electrophiles with retention of configuration at P. Surprisingly, cyclization of bifunctional secondary phosphine alkyl tosylates proceeded under mild conditions with inversion of configuration at the nucleophile to yield P-stereogenic syn-phosphiranes. DFT studies suggested that the novel stereochemistry results from acid-promoted tosylate dissociation to yield an intermediate phosphenium-bridged cation, which undergoes syn-selective cyclization.

Detecting multicomponent gases over extensive concentration ranges with laser spectroscopy faces challenges of complex configurations, intricate spectral analysis, and reduced accuracy. Neural networks offer transformative potential for advancing laser spectroscopy by facilitating real-time optimization and automation of experimental processes. Here, we report a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) spectroscopic system enhanced by a feedforward neural network (FNN) algorithm.

Graphene layers can assemble in two shifted metastable positions per interface, leading to eight possible structural arrangements in five-layer graphene, six of which correspond to distinct periodic crystals. These polytypes exhibit diverse symmetries, interlayer electronic hybridization, van der Waals adhesion, and optical responses. Arrangements lacking inversion [I] and mirror [M] symmetries host intrinsic polarizations, while those with sufficiently flat electronic bands display orbital magnetization, unconventional superconductivity, and anomalous fractional quantum Hall states.

Weyl metals, known for their topological structure and chiral anomaly, exhibit nonlinear transport that defies conventional theory. In this study, ZrTe, an inversion-symmetric Dirac semimetal tunable to a Weyl state by magnetic field, is investigated, and rectification (alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) conversion) and third harmonic generation in longitudinal configurations is revealed. Despite its bulk inversion symmetry, symmetry-forbidden rectification and a dynamic phase transition arising from the chiral anomaly are observed.
