Article Abstract

The hybrid L-edge/L-XRF densitometer (HLED) was developed for on-site nuclear fuel assays intended for safeguards purpose. The HLED can simultaneously measure both X-ray photon transmissions and characteristic X-ray emissions, which characterizes the elemental composition of samples of interest to determine the concentration of actinide-bearing materials, such as plutonium and uranium, in a nuclear fuel. A prototype of the HLED equipment was fabricated and tested to study the feasibility of nuclear material assays using a surrogate material (lead) to avoid radiation effects from nuclear materials. The uncertainty of the L-edge and L-XRF characteristics of the sample material are discussed in the article.

We report the hydrothermal syntheses and structural and spectroscopic characterization of two new uranium oxide hydrate frameworks (UOHFs) with either Pr or Nd ions, Pr(HO)[(UO)UO(OH)] () or Nd(HO)[(UO)UO(OH)] (). Both UOHFs crystallize in the orthorhombic 222 space group and display needle crystal morphologies. Their crystal structures are composed of β-UO-type layers connected by double uranium polyhedra to form the frameworks, with disordered Pr/Nd ions within the framework channels, as revealed by synchrotron single-crystal XRD.

Against the backdrop of global carbon neutrality target driving the transformation of energy structure, alcohol fuel cells (AFCs) show great application potential; However, the sluggish kinetics of their anodic alcohol oxidation reaction hinders the commercialization of AFCs. Metallene is a novel 2D material with potential application prospect in the field of electrocatalysis. In this paper, PdMoW trimetallene has been successfully produced by a one-pot wet-chemical method, which displays a unique two-dimensional curved ultrathin graphene structure.

Chemical alteration of UO micro-particles in model lung systems.

Uranium dioxide (UO) particles can be released from mines, nuclear fuel manufacturing, reactor accidents, and weapons use. They pose inhalation risks, yet their behavior in the human lung remains poorly understood. This study investigates the long-term chemical alteration and dissolution of µm-sized UO particles in two model lung fluids: Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF), representing extracellular and intracellular lung environments, respectively.

In the event of an accident at a nuclear fuel handling facility, the wounds of the affected workers may be contaminated with actinides such as uranium, neptunium, plutonium, and americium. The accidental absorption of actinides from wounds can lead to a significant degree of internal radiation exposure, which can be hazardous to the human body. Although the current approach for identifying actinide contamination is based on the detection of α-particles, the applicability of this approach is reduced for wound contamination due to the α-particles being easily shielded by various components of bodily fluid.

Biodiesel is a renewable and biodegradable alternative fuel, but its susceptibility to oxidative degradation compromises its storage stability and performance. Synthetic antioxidants are commonly used to mitigate this issue. However, there is growing interest in natural antioxidants as sustainable alternatives.
