The aim of the study was to assess pain in Bos indicus bull calves following surgical castration. Forty-two animals were randomised to four groups: no castration (NC, n = 6); castration with pre-operative lidocaine (CL, n = 12); castration with pre-operative meloxicam (CM, n = 12); and, castration alone (C, n = 12). Bodyweight was measured regularly and pedometers provided data on activity and rest from day -7 (7 days prior to surgery) to 13. Blood was collected for the measurement of serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin, fibrinogen, and iron on days 0, 3 and 6. Bodyweight and pedometry data were analysed with a mixed effect model. The blood results were analysed with repeated measure one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). There was no treatment effect on bodyweight or activity. The duration of rest was greatest in the CM group and lowest in the C group. There was a significant increase in the concentrations of SAA, haptoglobin, and fibrinogen in all of the groups from day 0 to 3. Iron concentrations were not different at the time points it was measured. The results of this study suggest that animals rest for longer periods after the pre-operative administration of meloxicam. The other objective assessments measured in this study were not able to consistently differentiate between treatment groups.

Purpose: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer face unique long-term social and health challenges that impact their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study explores the association between lifestyle behaviors (physical activity, body composition, and nutrition) and HRQoL as well as fatigue in AYA cancer survivors.
Methods: The cross-sectional SURVAYA study analyzed data from long-term AYA cancer survivors (5-20 years post diagnosis, aged 18-39 at diagnosis) in The Netherlands.

Background: Disease is a key factor to shorten productive lifespan of dairy cattle. Shifting from classical 'treating existing diseases' to 'preventing diseases before they occur' is a challenge in high-producing dairy cattle. Immunity plays a crucial role in defending against disease.

Objective: Chronic venous disease (CVD) of the lower extremities is a common health problem, with moderate to severe symptoms such as leg pain and sensation of swelling, and potential severe complications such as venous ulcers. However, few population based, physician performed duplex ultrasound (DUS) studies on CVD prevalence and associated risk factors exist. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of the different CEAP (Clinical-Etiological-Anatomical-Pathophysiological) clinical classes, CVD CEAP clinical class C3 - C6, and superficial venous reflux in a Dutch population, along with associated risk factors.

The COMFORTneo scale is widely used to assess pain in infants, yet its validity for extremely preterm (EPT) infants (< 26 weeks' gestation) remains unclear. This study evaluated the scale's ability to distinguish pain in EPT versus PT infants (26-37 weeks' gestation). We performed a retrospective cohort study in a tertiary neonatology intensive care unit, University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate whether subgroups with more severe inflammatory symptoms during a knee pain flare benefited more from a high dose ibuprofen treatment than subgroups with less severe inflammatory symptoms.
Methods: This secondary analysis included adults with ≥ 1 flares of knee pain in the last year, who experienced a new episode within 24 h and randomized into two treatment groups of daily ibuprofen 1200 mg or 2400 mg for 5 days. A multilevel regression analysis was used to assess interaction effects between intervention groups and pre-defined subgroups, based on osteoarthritis related symptoms (severity of morning stiffness, swelling, and pain).
