The thermal grill, in which innocuous warm and cool stimuli are interlaced, can produce a paradoxical burning pain sensation-the thermal grill illusion (TGI). Although the mechanisms underlying TGI remain unclear, prominent theories point to spinal dorsal horn integration of innocuous thermal inputs to elicit pain. It remains unknown whether the TGI activates peripheral nociceptors, or solely thermosensitive afferents that are integrated within the spinal cord to give rise to a painful experience.

The immune interactions within the gut-brain axis represent a critical etiological factor in psychiatric disorders. The gut microbiota and their metabolites serve as biological mediators that regulate neuroimmune activation and suppression in the central nervous system (CNS). During intestinal immune activation, pro-inflammatory cytokines (, IL-6, TNF-α) propagate to the CNS compromised blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity or vagal afferent fibers, disrupting neurotransmitter metabolism and inducing microglial hyperactivation, thereby exacerbating neuroinflammation.

The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) via its IL-6 signal transducer (IL6ST/gp130) plays an important role in neuronal survival, neuro-regeneration, and pathological pain. While its critical importance in the nervous system is well established, the underlying molecular mechanisms and the involvement of microRNAs (miRNAs) as critical regulators of biological processes in health and disease are not sufficiently understood. We identified miR-486-5p as the single significantly deregulated miRNA in sensory neurons with a conditional depletion of gp130.

The cardiopulmonary system is not only a pump-respirator network but also a sophisticated sensor-effector circuit. Recent findings have highlighted how mechanical and inflammatory stress in the heart and lungs is transmitted via afferent nerves-including vagal, glossopharyngeal, and spinal fibers-to the brainstem and higher autonomic centers. These afferent signals trigger adaptive or maladaptive efferent responses via the sympathetic nervous system, which in turn modulate immune cell dynamics in the bone marrow and peripheral organs.

Interpersonal touch is an important channel of social emotional interaction. How these physical skin-to-skin touch expressions are processed in the peripheral nervous system is not well understood. From microneurography recordings in humans, we evaluated the capacity of six subtypes of cutaneous mechanoreceptive afferents to differentiate human-delivered social touch expressions.
