To investigate the fate of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) during milk processing, milk of cows treated via rumen fistula with a mixture of 84% (w/w) ragwort (Jacobaea vulgaris, syn. Senecio jacobaea) and 16% narrow-leaved ragwort (Senecio inaequidens) was processed using laboratory scale heating systems with industrial settings. Pasteurised and sterilised (UHT) milk were produced, as well as set-type yoghurt and cheese. Samples were analysed for 29 PAs using LC-MS/MS, of which 11 PAs were detected above LOQ in the samples (0.1 µg l). Alterations in the PA concentration and composition between the standardised milk and the corresponding end-product(s) were evaluated. The heat treatments applied for pasteurisation and UHT sterilisation to prepare semi-skimmed consumption milk did not affect the PA levels in the end-products. In yoghurt, after fermentation of standardised milk (6 h, pH 4.4), 73% of total PAs were recovered. The PA concentration, specifically dehydrojacoline, was decreased, although not quantifiable, during cheese production. A further decrease of 38% during 6 weeks of ripening was observed. The results show that the PA concentration of natural contaminated cow's milk is not affected by heat treatment applied for pasteurised and sterilised milk, but that microbial fermentation of the milk leads to a lowered PA concentration in yoghurt and cheese. This is probably due to microbiological degradation, since PAs are fairly stable under acidic conditions.

Aims: This study aims to develop and evaluate a rapid and high-multiplex pathogen detection method for clinical and food specimens to address the ongoing public health threat of foodborne infections and the limitations of conventional culture-based diagnostics.
Methods And Results: The foodborne bacteria (FBB) assay integrates multiplex PCR, T7 exonuclease hydrolysis, and a suspension bead array to simultaneously detect 16 genes from 13 major foodborne bacteria. Analytical performance was evaluated using reference strains, while diagnostic performance was assessed using clinical and food samples.

In pig production, weaning is a critical period where piglets face several environmental stressors. This transition leads to a significant growth reduction and can result in digestive disorders, including diarrhea. To formulate a feed that meets zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) requirements during the weaning period while minimizing their release into the environment, it became evident that a more bioavailable micro-mineral supplement is necessary.

Unlabelled: Although wastewater treatment plants harbor many pathogens, traditional methods that monitor the microbial quality of surface water and wastewater have not changed since the early 1900s and often disregard the presence of other types of significant waterborne pathogens such as viruses. We used metagenomics and quantitative PCR to assess the taxonomy, functional profiling, and seasonal patterns of DNA and RNA viruses, including the virome distribution in aquatic environments receiving wastewater discharges. Environmental water samples were collected at 11 locations in Winnipeg, Manitoba, along the Red and Assiniboine rivers during the Spring, Summer, and Fall 2021.

Background: Uncertainty exists regarding the health-related quality of life (HRQL) benefits of food allergen oral immunotherapy (OIT). Up-to-date meta-analyses incorporating HRQL data from recent randomised trials are lacking.
Methods: Systematic searches of MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL and Google Scholar were conducted for food OIT randomised trials (versus any comparator) that measured HRQL with a validated instrument (27 July 2023).

In this study, a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method was used to synthesize a novel gold-yttrium trimesic acid metal-organic framework (Au-Y-TMA MOF), demonstrating significant improvements over conventional single-metal MOFs, that is, yttrium trimesic acid (Y-TMA), in both supercapacitor applications and electrochemical antibiotic detection. The X-ray diffraction patterns of Au-Y-TMA confirmed the presence and impact of Au in the Y-TMA matrix, while field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed a heterogeneous combination of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and Y-TMA, suggesting a nonuniform distribution and possible interaction. The developed half-cell supercapacitor exhibited a remarkable capacitance value of 1836 F/g at a current density of 5 A/g by galvanostatic charging-discharging (GCD) measurement.
