Article Abstract

In a field trial, pyriproxyfen (Sumilarv 0.5% G) applied at 10 g and 50 g per catch basin and S-methoprene (Altosid XR briquet 2.1%) at 1 briquet per catch basin at a local park provided 100% inhibition of adult emergence (IAE) of the test species, Culex quinquefasciatus , for the first 3 wk. The IAE dropped to 69% to 85% for pyriproxyfen and 68% for methoprene at 4 wk posttreatment. The IAE at 5 to 8 wk posttreatment, although remaining high, was overshadowed by high mortality in control catch basins. The high mortality in control could be attributed to autodissemination of pyriproxyfen by mosquitoes from treated to untreated catch basins.

Species-specific behaviour and environmental drivers of trap interactions in wild ornamental fishes.

The harvest of animals from the wild is a pervasive selective force, especially in fisheries, where harvesting often targets individuals with specific traits. While most research has focused on large-scale commercial or recreational fisheries, little attention has been paid to artisanal fisheries, particularly those targeting ornamental species. Furthermore, environmental factors such as temperature and oxygen levels influence the behaviour of fishes, such as boldness and sociability, but their role in the harvesting process remains poorly understood.

The Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896) is a euryhaline and eurythermal species native to the Atlantic coasts of the Americas. Although its widespread distribution across the Mediterranean basin is well documented, information on its reproductive patterns remains limited. This study focused on the combination of both macroscopic and histologic characterization of ovarian developmental stages in female blue crabs along the north-central Italian Adriatic coast, within the spawning period.

During the rearing period, fish may be exposed to fasting due to low or high temperatures, transportation, handling, and other stressors, while they may catch-up the growth differently after supplying the feed. The aim of this study was to investigate the compensatory growth (CG) response of juvenile Siberian sturgeon after restricted feeding. In the first phase (60 days), triplicate groups of fish were subjected to feed restriction (25%, 50%, and 75% of the amount needed to reach satiation, respectively) or satiation feeding (control) and in the second phase all treatment groups were fed to satiation for an additional 60 days.

Fish diversity is essential for maintaining the balance of aquatic ecosystems, particularly in rivers impacted by overfishing and hydropower projects, such as the Jinsha river, the upstream segment of the Yangtze river. During initial phases (August and November, 2023) of the 10-year fishing ban in the Yangtze river basin, we investigated fish diversity, seasonal variations, and their correlation with environmental factors in the Jinsha river using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding. Utilizing two pairs of 12S rRNA primers, MiFish-U and AcMDB07, we identified 61 fish species across 5 orders, 17 families, and 52 genera, including 4 national protected and 7 invasive alien fish.

Background: Larval control is crucial for managing mosquito arbovirus vectors. Quality control (QC) data from insecticide-based interventions are rarely exploited to assess the effectiveness of biocides in the field. This study aims to: (i) evaluate the outcomes of large-scale catch basin treatments with diflubenzuron (DFB) and Bacillus thuringiensis var.
