Article Abstract

Coral reefs are amongst the most diverse ecosystems on Earth where complex inter-specific interactions are ubiquitous. An example of such interactions is the mutualistic relationship between damselfishes and branching corals in the Northern Red Sea, where the fish use corals as shelter and provide them with nutrients, enhance the flow between their branches, and protect them from predators. By enhancing the flow between the coral branches, the fish ventilate the coral's inner zone, mitigating hypoxic conditions that otherwise develop within that zone during the night. Here, we tested, for the first time, the effects of the damselfish on photosynthesis and respiration in its host coral Laboratory experiments using an intermittent-flow respirometer showed that the presence of fish between the coral branches under light conditions augmented the coral's photosynthetic rate. No effect on the coral's respiration was found under dark conditions. When a fish was allowed to enter the inner zone of a dead coral skeleton, its respiration was higher than when it was in a live coral. Field observations indicated that damselfish were present between coral branches 18-34% of the time during daylight hours and at all times during the night. Considering the changes induced by the fish together with the proportion of time they were found between coral branches in the field, the effect of the fish amounted to an augmentation of 3-6% of the coral's daily photosynthesis. Our findings reveal a previously unknown positive contribution of coral-dwelling fish to their host's photosynthesis.

The ongoing degradation of coral reef habitats is widely acknowledged to have adverse effects on the abundance and diversity of reef fish populations, yet the direct effects on ecosystem functions remain uncertain. This study used a quantitative approach to determine the mechanistic links between fish assemblages and ecological function. We investigated the effects of 3D habitat structure and coral morphology on the ecological, behavioral, and morphological functional traits of reef fish within a protected marine national park.

The CLAVATA signaling pathway regulates plant development and plant-environment interactions. CLAVATA signaling consists of mobile, cell-type or environment-specific CLAVATA3/ESR-related (CLE) peptides, which are perceived by a receptor complex consisting of leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinases such as CLAVATA1 and receptor-like proteins such as CLAVATA2, which often functions with the pseudokinase CORYNE (CRN). CLAVATA signaling has been extensively studied in various plant species for its developmental role in meristem maintenance.

Although structural strategic family therapy (FT) is an evidence-based approach for adolescent behavior problems, manualized family therapy models have not been widely adopted in usual care due to the training and implementation resources required. This article presents a competency framework for utilizing family collaboration with adolescent cases. It begins by discussing challenges to implementing FT in routine care and presents the core elements strategy, then introduces three "branches" that together constitute a continuum of family involvement-family collaboration, family skills training, and systemic family therapy-and describes the rationale and procedures for focusing on competency guidelines for family collaboration specifically.

Philippine coral reefs have significantly declined over the past 40 years, resulting in reduced coral cover and shifts in the composition of associated organisms. While research on offshore reef systems often focuses on benthic habitat cover and reef fish, limited information remains on post-disturbance macroinvertebrate communities at a local scale. This study examines the impacts of two tropical cyclones on benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Apo Reef Natural Park (ARNP), Philippines.
