Article Abstract

A simple and efficient method for determining multiple mycotoxins was developed using a QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe)-based extraction procedure in vegetable oils. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used for the quantification and confirmation of 16 chemically diversified mycotoxins. Different extraction procedures were studied and optimised by spiking 16 analytes into blank matrix, and the extraction with 85% MeCN solution and C18 as cleaning sorbent allowed an efficient recovery of 72.8-105.8% with RSDs less than 7%. The limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.04 to 2.9 ng g. The developed method was finally applied to screen mycotoxins in 62 vegetable oil samples. Zearalenone (ZEN), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), aflatoxin B2 (AFB2), aflatoxin G1 (AFG1) and α-zearalenol (α-ZOL) were detected, with maximum concentrations of 0.59 (AFG1)-42.5 (ZEN) ng g. The method developed has the advantages of high sensitivity, accuracy and selectivity, and it can be applied to the target screening of mycotoxins in real samples.

Patulin (PAT), a mycotoxin primarily produced by Penicillium species, presents a serious food safety challenge due to its widespread occurrence and harmful health effects. Among current detoxification approaches, yeast-based degradation is particularly promising, offering high efficiency, environmental sustainability, and preservation of food quality-key attributes for industrial application. However, the enzymatic pathways involved and the potential for concurrent quality enhancement remain poorly understood.

Edible vegetable oils are rich in nutrients and essential ingredients for daily cooking. However, fraud, expired products, deceptive labeling, and false origin claims in the vegetable oil industry pose significant risks to consumers' health, safety, and economic well-being. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop portable techniques to realize the authenticity of edible vegetable oils.

Mycotoxin contamination remains a persistent barrier to Malawi's food safety, public health, and agricultural development. This systematic review assessed 36 peer-reviewed and grey literature sources published between 2009 and 2025 to evaluate contamination prevalence, knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among food value chain stakeholders, and the effectiveness of existing interventions. The review followed PRISMA guidelines and applied thematic analysis to identify trends and gaps.

Patulin (PAT), a potent mycotoxin commonly found in fruit and vegetable products, represents a critical threat to food safety and public health. Its cytotoxicity arises from the disruption of intracellular signaling pathways and oxidative balance, leading to gastrointestinal impairment, immune suppression, and systemic toxicity. To mitigate these risks, we present a label-free photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for ultrasensitive PAT detection, employing an in situ-synthesized AgS quantum dot (QD)-sensitized BiOI/BiO heterojunction.

Aflatoxins (AFTs) are increasingly recognized as significant contributors to environmental and food pollution, posing a serious threat to human health and public safety. The advancement of materials capable of both detection and removal of aflatoxins presents considerable challenges within the realm of food safety. In this study, the conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) was firstly introduced as the adsorbent for AFTs.
