Background: Frail patients are more vulnerable to perioperative stressors of liver transplantation (LT). Program Specific Reports, used in transplant center auditing, risk-adjust for frailty using the Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) scale. We evaluate the extent to which functional impairment/disability is associated with increased risk of postoperative death.
Methods: We included 24 505 first-time LT recipients from the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (2006-2011). We categorized patients as Severe, Moderate, or Normal function/disability using the KPS scale and evaluated risk of 30- and 90-day mortality. Analyses took potential center-specific differences in KPS measurement protocols into account using hierarchal logistic modeling.
Results: Over one-quarter of our population was Severely impaired/disabled, and 30.5% had no functional limitations. Severely and Moderately impaired/disabled patients had 2.56 (95% CI 1.91-3.44) and 1.40 (95% CI 1.10-1.78) times the odds of 30-day mortality, respectively, after adjusting for key recipient and donor factors. Estimates remained consistent regardless of Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, medical condition, or clustering analyses by center. Technical/operative complications and multiorgan failure/hemorrhage were more common causes of death among more Severely disabled patients than in higher functioning groups.
Conclusions: Pre-transplant functional status, assessed using the KPS scale, is a reliable predictor of post-LT mortality in the United States.

Background: Standard treatments for advanced cervical cancer, such as paclitaxel-cisplatin combination (TP) chemotherapy, are often limited by reduced efficacy and significant toxicity. Cinobufacini (Huachansu), a traditional Chinese medicine, has demonstrated potential in enhancing the effectiveness of conventional cancer therapies.
Methods: A systematic search of Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and other databases was conducted up to July 30, 2024.

Chiari I malformation (CIM) is a structural defect in the cerebellum, which is characterized by herniation of the cerebellar tonsils into the foramen magnum. While open foramen magnum decompression is traditional, some surgeons practice a minimally invasive technique. Our paper intends to further elucidate the differences in outcomes between the traditional and minimally invasive foramen magnum decompression (MID).

Background: The rising incidence of cancer has highlighted the need for effective treatment strategies, particularly for bone tumors like distal femoral tumors. These tumors are among the most prevalent types of bone malignancies, often necessitating extensive surgical intervention to achieve optimal outcomes. Limb-salvage surgery, which involves resecting the tumor and reconstructing the limb with prosthetic devices, has become the standard approach for managing both malignant and aggressive benign tumors of the distal femur.

Objective: Familial cerebral cavernous malformation (FCCM) is a genetically inherited condition involving the collection of abnormal slow-flow venous capillaries with no cerebral parenchyma in between. In this case series, we review the clinical, radiological, pathological, and genetic findings of seven blood relatives diagnosed with FCCM and discuss their treatment in light of the different presentations.
Methods: The patients with FCCMs were assessed in our neurosurgery clinic between April 2016 and October 2024.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to look for a correlation between personal resources, care burden and life satisfaction in carers of people with dementia of the Alzheimer type.
Methods: The study involved 100 family and professional carers providing care for a person with dementia of the Alzheimer type. Carers answered survey questions and completed questionnaires: Orientation to Life Questionnaire - SOC-29, Generalised Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Social Support Questionnaire (F-SozU K-22), Depression Assessment Questionnaire (KPD), Perceived Stress Questionnaire (KPS), Involvement Evaluation Questionnaire (IEQ) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS).
