Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), a common bearing surface in total joint arthroplasty, is subject to material property tradeoffs associated with conventional processing techniques. For orthopaedic applications, radiation-induced cross-linking is used to enhance the wear resistance of the material, but cross-linking also restricts relative chain movement in the amorphous regions and hence decreases toughness. Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) is proposed as a novel mechanism by which entanglements can be introduced to the polymer bulk during consolidation, with the aim of imparting the same tribological benefits of conventional processing without complete inhibition of chain motion. ECAE processing at temperatures near the crystalline melt for UHMWPE produces (1) increased entanglements compared to control materials; (2) increasing entanglements with increasing temperature; and (3) mechanical properties between values for untreated polyethylene and for cross-linked polyethylene. These results support additional research in ECAE-processed UHMWPE for joint arthroplasty applications.

Intercropping maize and soybean with distinct plant heights is a typical practice in diversified cropping systems, where shadows cast by taller maize plants onto soybean rows pose significant challenges for image based recognition. This study conducted experiments throughout the entire soybean-maize intercropping period to address illumination variation. Based on the height difference between crops, solar elevation angle, and light intensity at the top of the soybean canopy, an illumination compensation regression model was developed.

Volume-regulated anion channels (VRACs) are large-pore channels present in nearly all vertebrate cells, playing key roles in cell volume regulation and autocrine/paracrine signaling. Here, we identify the ubiquitously expressed puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase (PSA) as a binding partner of the obligatory VRAC subunit SWELL1 (also known as LRRC8A) and report the cryo-electron microscopy structure of the SWELL1-PSA complex. Three PSA molecules associate with a single SWELL1 hexamer, coupling adjacent leucine-rich repeat (LRR) domains into local dimers.

Background: Surgical health care disparities remain pervasive in the US, with historically marginalized communities disproportionately suffering from numerous health disorders and experiencing excess mortality compared to the majority community. The African American/Black community remains one of those historically challenged communities and efforts to help mitigate these health care disparities are ongoing.
Methods: To aid in this issue, The Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) convened a series of presentations and a panel discussion by leaders from SBAS to better articulate disease specific health care disparities in the Black community.

Background: Intracranial aneurysms, particularly saccular types, are localized dilations of cerebral vessels prone to rupture, leading to life-threatening complications such as subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Purpose: This study aimed to characterize the localized hemodynamic environment within the aneurysm dome and evaluate how spatial interactions among key flow parameters contribute to rupture risk, using a synergistic analytical framework.
Methods: We applied the targeted evaluation of synergistic links in aneurysms (TESLA) framework to analyze 18 intracranial aneurysms from 15 patients.
