Article Abstract

The High Mobility Group A1 proteins (HMGA1) are nonhistone chromatinic proteins with a critical role in development and cancer. We have recently reported that HMGA1 proteins are able to increase the expression of spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) genes, thus impairing SAC function and causing chromosomal instability in cancer cells. Moreover, we found a significant correlation between HMGA1 and SAC genes expression in human colon carcinomas. Here, we report that mouse embryonic fibroblasts null for the Hmga1 gene show downregulation of Bub1, Bub1b, Mad2l1 and Ttk SAC genes, and present several features of chromosomal instability, such as nuclear abnormalities, binucleation, micronuclei and karyotypic alterations. Interestingky, also MEFs carrying only one impaired Hmga1 allele present karyotypic alterations. These results indicate that HMGA1 proteins regulate SAC genes expression and, thereby, genomic stability also in embryonic cells.

Background: Preeclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive disorder and a major cause of maternal and fetal mortality. We aimed to investigate the molecular properties of early-onset PE, which requires delivery before 34 weeks' gestation by analyzing the molecular cytokine profile of amniotic fluid obtained during cesarean section from pregnant women with early-onset PE, based on the presence or absence of small-for-gestational age (SGA).

Methods: This study included 73 pregnant women with early-onset PE among which 21 women had SGA infants, whose birth weight was less than the 10th percentile of the gestational age-specific birth weight.

Little is known about the impacts of fluctuating temperatures on early development in fishes, as most experiments on the effects of temperature use constant temperature exposures. Here we asked whether thermal performance curves (TPCs) for development generated at constant temperatures can be used to make predictions about performance at fluctuating temperatures. We incubated embryos of a topminnow, Fundulus heteroclitus, to the same mean temperature with differing extents of diel fluctuation (26±0 °C, 26±3 °C, 26±5 °C, 26±7 °C).

Synthetic cannabinoids like CUMYL-4CN-BINACA are emerging psychoactive substances with largely unknown developmental toxicity. Given the growing concern about prenatal and early-life exposure, this study assessed its impact on zebrafish embryos, focusing on morphological development, larval behavior, and gene expression. Embryos were exposed to concentrations of 1.

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) are pervasive in aquatic environments, with aged MNPs being the predominant form due to environmental weathering. However, their developmental toxicity, particularly regarding skeletal formation, remains poorly understood. In this study, aged polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) were prepared via 48-hour UV irradiation and compared with pristine PSNPs in zebrafish embryo exposures starting within 4 h post-fertilization (hpf) and lasting for 7 days.

Background: Bama Huoma is a high-value cash crop because its seeds are known as the "holy seeds of longevity". However, its seed yield is restricted by dioecism, and information about flower sex differentiation in this plant is lacking.

Results: In this study, anatomical analysis and dynamic transcriptome profiling were performed to explore the mechanism of sex differentiation in Bama Huoma.
