Current induced magnetization switching by spin-orbit torques offers an energy-efficient means of writing information in heavy metal/ferromagnet (FM) multilayer systems. The relative contributions of field-like torques and damping-like torques to the magnetization switching induced by the electrical current are still under debate. Here, we describe a device based on a symmetric Pt/FM/Pt structure, in which we demonstrate a strong damping-like torque from the spin Hall effect and unmeasurable field-like torque from Rashba effect. The spin-orbit effective fields due to the spin Hall effect were investigated quantitatively and were found to be consistent with the switching effective fields after accounting for the switching current reduction due to thermal fluctuations from the current pulse. A non-linear dependence of deterministic switching of average Mz on the in-plane magnetic field was revealed, which could be explained and understood by micromagnetic simulation.

Prototheca, a genus of opportunistic pathogenic microalgae, can cause protothecosis in humans and animals, manifesting as cutaneous lesions or disseminated/systemic infections. This report describes a rare case of Prototheca wickerhamii toe infection in a 78-year-old Chinese male, presenting initially as gouty arthritis. The patient, who worked in fish farming with frequent water exposure, had a history of herpes zoster and hypertension.

This report sought to employ multi-modal integration of pre-treatment brain (electroencephalogram, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging) and blood (immune and metabolic) biomarkers to facilitate causal inference-based treatment selection by virtue of establishing predictability of remission to multi-stage antidepressant treatment. Data from two stages of pharmacotherapy in the 'Establishing Moderators and Biosignatures of Antidepressant Response for Clinical Care for Depression' (EMBARC) study from participants with both brain and blood biomarkers were included (N = 197). Participants were initially randomized to sertraline or placebo (Stage 1), and depending on clinical response at week-8, their therapy in Stage 2 was either maintained or switched (to sertraline, if a non-responder to placebo, or to bupropion, if a non-responder to sertraline).

Light-induced magnetisation switching is one of the most intriguing and promising areas where an ultrafast phenomenon can be utilised in technological applications. So far, experiment and theory have considered the origin of all-optical helicity-independent magnetisation switching (AO-HIS) in individual magnetic films only as a microscopically local, thermally-driven process of angular momentum transfer between different subsystems. Here, we demonstrate that this local picture is insufficient and that AO-HIS must also be regarded as a spatially inhomogeneous process along the depth within a few-nanometre thin magnetic layer.

The Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus is a social species in which individuals aggregate for protection during the day using chemicals in their urine as guiding cues. This behavior changes when animals are infected by Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1), such that healthy animals avoid the urine of diseased conspecifics. Using an Earth-abundant transition metal to mediate formation and splitting of C-C σ-bonds, in response to electrical stimuli, constitutes a promising strategy to construct complex organic skeletons. Here, we showcase how [ BuN][N] reacts with an isocyanide adduct of a tetrahedral and high-spin Ti complex, [(Tp )TiCl] (1), to enact N-atom transfer, C-N bond formation, and C-C coupling, to form a dinuclear complex, [(Tp )Ti{AdN(N)C-C(N)NAd}Ti(Tp )] (3), with two Ti ions bridged by a disubstituted oxalimidamide ligand ( Bu = -butyl, Tp = hydrotris(3--butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, Ad = 1-adamantyl).
