Telomerase activity in cancer cells is commonly analyzed by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay termed the telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP). However, nonspecific inhibition of Taq polymerase during the PCR step is frequently observed in inhibitor analysis or drug screening. Thus, the removal of excess inhibitors prior to PCR is an essential step for the proper evaluation of telomerase inhibitory effects. Here, a size exclusion spin column was applied to remove small molecular weight inhibitors from the telomerase extension products. The spin column-added protocol, termed sTRAP, provides a more reliable estimation of the inhibitory effects of telomerase activity.

Multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) methods are a versatile tool to retrieve information from neurophysiological data obtained with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques. Since fMRI is based on measuring the hemodynamic response following neural activation, the spatial specificity of the fMRI signal is inherently limited by contributions of macrovascular compartments that drain the signal from the actual location of neural activation, making it challenging to image cortical structures at the spatial scale of cortical columns and layers. By relying on information from multiple voxels, MVPA has shown promising results in retrieving information encoded in fine-grained spatial patterns.

Phage-like particles (PLPs) are fabricated self-assembling nanoparticles derived from the structural elements of bacteriophages. These particles have biotechnological utility because of the ability to easily modify surface chemistry and compartmentalize nucleic acids or other materials. A consequential implementation of PLPs in diagnostics is as process controls in nucleic acid amplification tests, where control RNAs are packaged within the protein capsid and protected from degradation by RNases in the sample matrix.
