Objective: The goal of this study is to evaluate some structural changes in muscular, collagenous and neural components as well as expression of Cajal-like cells and apoptosis of smooth muscle cells in congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO).
Methods: Tissue specimens were obtained from 25 patients with UPJO and compared with normal ureteropelvic junction regions of 19 autopsies. In paraffin embedded sections the amount of Cajal-like cells, density of nerve fibers and smooth muscle cell apoptosis (using immunohistochemical staining) were determined. Collagen deposition and muscular components were stained by Trichrome-Masson staining and evaluated by image analysis techniques. Arrangement of muscular bundles was also evaluated qualitatively. Findings : The number of Cajal-like cells was significantly lower in patients than in controls. The apoptotic score and mean number of nerve fibers were not statistically different for the two groups. Arrangement of muscular fibers was more irregular in patients than in controls (P<0.001). Collagen deposition was significantly higher in patients than in controls (P<0.001). The mean amount of muscular component was lower in patients than in normal ones. (P= 0.09) CONCLUSION: We found significant pathologic changes in congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction such as decrease in Cajal-like cells, increase in collagen deposition and irregular arrangement of muscle fibers.

Telocytes are specialized interstitial cells characterized by their unique structure, which features a relatively small cell body and long cytoplasmic projections, called telopodes. Formerly referred to as interstitial Cajal-like cells, telocytes are capable of forming a complex communication network between various stromal and epithelial cell types. Despite their positive staining for CD34 and vimentin antibodies, the mesenchymal origin of these cells, as well as whether telocytes should be considered distinct cell populations or just a subpopulation of other stromal cells, remains uncertain.

Anoctamin-1 Ca-activated Cl channels (ANO1) are proposed to modulate contractility of urethra smooth muscle cells (USMC), but their cellular expression and contribution to agonist/neural evoked activity is unclear. ANO1 is implicated as a potential target to treat incontinence, thus this is an important issue to resolve. We sought to clarify roles of ANO1 in contractility of mouse USMC.

We have previously reported that inactivation of c-kit and stem cell factor (SCF) might reduce interstitial Cajal-like cells (ICLCs) density, leading to gallbladder motility impairment and cholesterol gallstone (CG) formation. Based on bioinformatics prediction, this study explores the possible role of POU class 5 homeobox 1 (POU5F1) in c-kit/SCF regulation and investigates their function in ICLC activity and CG development. POU5F1 was identified as a transcription factor targeting both c-kit and SCF for transcription activation.

Introduction: Extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumors (EGISTs) are non-gastrointestinal sarcomas originating from Cajal-like cells. Recent studies show the tumor microenvironment is crucial and highlight the importance of intra-tumoral leukocyte populations in malignancies, which are greatly impacting treatment strategies in EGISTs.
Aim And Objectives: This study aims to characterize intra-tumoral leukocyte populations in EGISTs, correlating proliferative index (ki67) with leukocyte density and examining age-related effects on proliferative activity and immune response.

Objective: To analyze from a pathological perspective the differences between intermittent and persistent hydronephrosis in children with uretero-pelvic junction obstruction.
Methods: 23 children who underwent unilateral dismembered pyeloplasty (Anderson-Hynes operation) for intermittent hydronephrosis from September 2017 to March 2024 were included in the observation group. They were compared with a control group consisting of 23 children with persistent hydronephrosis matched for age, gender, and affected side.
