Pattern formation of a step on a growing crystal surface induced by a straight line source of atoms, which is escaping from the step at a velocity V(p), is studied with the use of a phase field model. From a straight step, fluctuations of the most unstable wavelength λ(max) grow. Competition of intrusions leads to coarsening of the pattern, and survived intrusions grow exponentially. With sufficient strength of the crystal anisotropy, a regular comblike pattern appears. This peculiar step pattern is similar to that observed on a Ga-deposited Si(111) surface. The final period of the intrusions, Λ, is determined when the exponential growth ends. The period depends on the strength F(u) of a current noise in diffusion as Λ∼λ(max)|lnF(u)|: such a logarithmic dependence is confirmed for the first time. A nonmonotonic V(p) dependence of Λ indicates that the comblike pattern with a small V(p) is related to an unstable growth mode of the free needle growth in a channel. The pattern is stabilized by the guiding linear source.

To understand how thermoplastic welding strength can be tuned through chemical modifications and macromolecular topology, we combined coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with experimental validation. Our simulations examined the diffusion dynamics of both linear and graft polymers across representative interfaces, revealing that diffusion-controlled interdigitation follows a power law, with the exponent decreasing from 0.34 to 0.

Ultra-silicon-rich nitride Bragg gratings provide a powerful platform for precise light manipulation in photonic chips. Their exceptionally high nonlinearity and strong grating-induced dispersion near the stop-band edges significantly reduce the power and length required for chip-scale light-matter interactions. Using computational methods, we theoretically investigate modulational instability, Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence, and pattern formation in this platform within the framework of the Akhmediev breather.

Flamingos feature one of the most sophisticated filter-feeding systems among birds, characterized by upside-down feeding, comb-like lamellae, and a piston-like tongue. However, the hydrodynamic functions of their L-shaped chattering beak, S-curved neck, and distinct behaviors such as stomping and feeding against the flow remain a mystery. Combining live flamingo experiments with live brine shrimp and passive particles, bioinspired physical models, and 3D CFD simulations, we show that flamingos generate self-induced vortical traps using their heads, beaks, and feet to capture agile planktonic prey in harsh fluid environments.

Amphiphilic copolymers of comb-like poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (PPEGMA) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) synthesized by one-pot atom transfer radical polymerization were mixed with lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide salt to formulate dry solid polymer electrolytes (DSPE) for semisolid-state Li-ion battery applications. The PEO-type side chain length (EO monomer's number) in the PEGMA macromonomer units was varied, and its influence on the mechanical and electrochemical characteristics was investigated. It was found that the copolymers, due to the presence of PMMA segments, possess viscoelastic behavior and less change in mechanical properties than a PEO homopolymer with 100 kDa molecular weight in the investigated temperature range.
